Cricket is one sport that transcends continents, countries and even platforms. Virtual cricket is always a delight to play and one of the most iconic cricket games over the years has been the EA Sports Cricket series that were big in the beginning of the millennium. However, for whatever reason, the game got shelved.
EA however announced that they will be coming up with a newer version of the iconic game as they received overwhelming response from the players of the previous versions. This means that 90s kids will have yet another masterpiece to spend their time on.
Before, EA had to contend with using different names for the players due to licensing rights. They will be going all in this time, getting the rights to all players from all boards including the BCCI. Though the two year time gap is long, it will be worth it.
A source for the video game company said, “Yes, the board is currently contemplating on how to move forward with the cricket game. We did a market study and realized that close to 15 million people still play the game, even after we stopped producing in 2007. Hence, it only makes sense for us to acknowledge a strong potential there. We are also aware that there are hardly any competitors within this market.”
“But, our primary objective if the game comes out in 2019, will be to acquire ICC and BCCI rights for the players. It’s no secret that India will be our primary sector of sales, and this time if we do venture back into the market, it will be with player rights. Our representatives have already had meetings with BCCI members, let’s see how talks progress.”
The most popular T20 leagues too will feature in the game, with the IPL and the KFC Big Bash in Australia featuring. This will excite younger fans of the game who love the format and will encourage them to get interested in the Test format as well.
Time to start saving and spend more time in front of the screens.
