Australia’s newly-appointed Test captain Pat Cummins scripted history during the ongoing first Test of the Ashes 2021-22 at the Gabba, in Brisbane. A few weeks ago, making Pat Cummins, a bowler, the Test captain of Australia looked like a concept for the future, however, the sensational bowler scripted history as the new skipper of the Australian side as he claimed a five-wicket haul.
Pat Cummins replaced Tim Paine to take over the reins of the captaincy position after the latter was involved in an ugly s*xting controversy. He is the first BOWLER to lead his country in a Test match in 63 years after Richie Benaud and also became the first captain in 39 years to take a five-wicket haul in the Ashes.
Pat, who has been one of the most consistent performers for Australia in the recent past. The sensational bowler has picked at least 3 wickets in each of his last 17 Tests, equalling the tally of the legendary Glenn McGrath.
He kickstarted his tenure in a blockbuster way, claiming the prized wicket of England’s star all-rounder Ben Stokes, who was playing his first competitive cricket match since July. He received a rising delivery from Cummins to Marnus Labuschagne at the third slip. Though Ollie Pope and Haseeb Hameed showed immense fighting spirit but Pat Cummins and Co. bundled them out under 150 runs.
Cummins dismissed Ben Stokes, Haseeb Hameed, Chris Woakes, Ollie Robinson, and Mark Wood to complete the five-wicket haul.
The official Twitter handle of the International Cricket Council also lauded Cummins’ achievement that helped Australia bundle out England under 150 on the first day of the opening Test.
“What a start for Pat Cummins as Test skipper, he finishes with a five-wicket haul as England are bowled out for 147,” the ICC tweeted.
