It was just a week ago when former Australian captain Ricky Ponting had urged David Warner to think about his Test career. Warner, who was going through a tough time, especially in the longest format of the game, had found himself at the receiving end of criticism and trolling. However, the cricketer has silenced all his critics with his bat as he made a stellar comeback against South Africa on Day 2 of the Boxing Day Test match at Melbourne Cricket Ground.
Warner was going through a rough patch in his career, especially in the longest format of the game, having registered 48, 21, 28, 0, and 3 in the six innings in the ongoing home Test summer. Several former cricketers and experts questioned Warner’s place on the side.
David Warner Made A Powerful Comeback

David Warner, who was playing his 100th Test match, finally ended his 3-year century drought in the longest format of the game by smashing a stunning double hundred against South Africa. In fact, Warner couldn’t have found a more fitting scene to answer back his critics as he became only the second batter (10th overall) after former captain Ricky Ponting smash a century in his 100th Test match. He also completed 8000 runs in Test format during his knock.
Talking about his knock, Australia had lost two quick wickets as they chased to go past South Africa’s first-innings score of 189 Warner formed a stable partnership alongside Steve Smith and fought valiantly against the Proteas. Warner reached the triple-figure mark with a stunning boundary against Kagiso Rabada.
But that’s not it, after registering his 25th ton, Warner smashed the Proteas bowlers to all parts of the park to reach his third double-hundred in the longest format of the game. He smashed 200 from 254 balls, in an innings studded with 16 fours and 2 sixes. With this knock, Warner became only the second batsman in history after Joe Root to score a double hundred in his 100th Test Match.
Meanwhile, social media has been buzzing with amazing reactions and tributes for the star batter. Check out some of the best reactions from the fans:
