10 Best Tweets On The 39th Anniversary Of India’s Historic 1983 World Cup Win

Videos and images of Kapil Dev, and stories of the underdog Team India from the 1983 World Cup were surfacing in behemoth numbers, with emotional and pride feelings attached to them on Saturday, June 25th, 2022 as the country celebrated the 39th anniversary of the 1983 World Cup triumph that changed the history of Indian cricket forever.

Amongst the most unlikely World Cup winners, it was Kapil Dev’s ‘daredevils’ who defeated the mighty West Indie in the final at Lord’s on this date 39 years ago by 43 runs.

In the 60-over a side contest from those days, India had set a target of 184 in the final which was expected to be chased down by West Indies, who had already won the previous two World Cups and were looking set for their third one.

Opener Kris Srikkanth was India’s top-scorer with 38 runs followed by 27 from Sandeep Patil and 26 from Mohinder Amarnath; only these three batters managed to cross 20 runs while there were also 20 extras given away by the West Indies.

Viv Richards’ wicket changed it all

West Indies lost opener Gordon Greenidge for just one run but the other opener, Desmond Haynes and number 3 batter Viv Richards took the command as they looked to be in cruise control of the low target chase. Until the tide turned with Haynes’s wicket at the score of 50.

The biggest scalp for India came soon after when Richards was dismissed by Madan Lal, skipper Kapil Dev taking a great catch running backwards while under the immense pressure of Richards’ wicket who went scoring 33 runs off 28 balls.

India pressed on the paddle and didn’t lose it for most of the remaining innings, with West Indies reeling at 76/6, India looked the favourites. But there were more twists to come as Jeff Dujon (25) and Malcolm Marshall (18) played some intent-filled strokes but Amarnath send them both packing. West Indies were bowled out for 140 with fittingly Amarnath delivering the final blow.
