Rarely does a player get trolled and abused and mocked by his own countrymen despite scoring a Test century. But India’s Ravindra Jadeja was in the firing line of the fans after his poor calling resulted in the run out of debutant Sarfaraz Khan in Rajkot.
Day 1 of the Rajkot Test against England was filled with exciting periods of play. England took the upper hand by having India in trouble at 33/3 before Ravindra Jadeja and Rohit Sharma resced the side with a 204-run partnership, the India skipper getting out on 131.
Then debutant Sarfaraz Khan played a blinder of a knock, enterprisingly taking down the England spinners by smashing 9 fours and a six in his knock of 62 runs in 66 balls. However, as he looked set for an epic century on debut, he got run-out due to some poor calling by Ravindra Jadeja, who was terribly slow in his 90s.
When Jadeja was on 99, the left-hander tapped a ball from James Anderson toward mid-on and called for a quick single, taking a couple of steps out of his crease.
Responding to Jadeja’s signal, Sarfaraz Khan, without watching much of the ball or the fielder, trusted Jadeja’s call and started running. However, Jadeja withdrew his call and gestured to send Sarfaraz back. But it was too late by then as Mark Wood had made a direct hit, catching Sarfaraz a couple of meters away from the stumps.
Sarfaraz Khan and Ravindra Jadeja looked at each other before the former started to walk off to applause and a standing ovation from the crowd, which included his father and wife.
Jadeja completed his century soon but didn’t celebrate much, apart from his trademark sword celebration. Fans have come up with hard-hitting tweets to slam the all-rounder
