In the annals of Indian cricket, the debut of Shubman Gill in ODIs marked the beginning of what many hoped would be a new era of batting prowess. Alongside Gill, two other young talents, Prithvi Shaw and Mayank Agarwal, also made their mark, albeit their journeys took different trajectories post their initial appearances.

Prithvi Shaw: The Prodigy’s Struggle for Consistency

Prithvi Shaw burst onto the scene with a promise that seemed boundless. His debut was marked by an innings that showcased his aggressive style, reminiscent of the greats. However, Shaw’s career has been a roller coaster. Despite his early success, including a Test century on debut, Shaw’s ODI career didn’t take off as expected.

Posts on X reflect a mix of disappointment and hope for Shaw. Fans and former players alike have noted his talent, often comparing him unfavorably with Gill due to his inconsistency. Shaw’s struggle with form, injuries, and a doping ban in 2019 significantly hampered his progress. His last ODI appearance was in 2019, and since then, despite occasional domestic brilliance, Shaw’s international career has been on a back burner. His IPL performances, especially in 2021, where he was the seventh-highest run-getter, showed glimpses of his potential, but consistency remains elusive.

Mayank Agarwal: The Tale of Resilience and Overshadowing

Mayank Agarwal, on the other hand, debuted with a solid technique and a reputation for being an anchor in the batting lineup. His ODI career, however, has been overshadowed by his Test performances and the competition from other openers. Agarwal’s journey has been one of resilience, with moments of brilliance like his career-best 243 in a Test against Bangladesh in 2019, showcasing his capability. Yet, in ODIs, he has struggled to maintain a consistent spot, often being in and out of the team.

The narrative around Mayank often highlights his ability to adapt and his mental fortitude, traits that have kept him in the conversation for team selection. However, the emergence of Shubman Gill, with his natural flair and consistent performances, has somewhat relegated Agarwal to the fringes of the ODI team.

The Divergence Post Gill’s Ascendancy

Both Shaw and Agarwal debuted with high expectations, but their careers post-Gill’s rise illustrate different paths. Gill’s consistent performances across formats have solidified his position, while Shaw and Agarwal have had to navigate through periods of uncertainty, form slumps, and competition for spots.

Shaw’s journey has been marked by moments of brilliance in domestic cricket and the IPL, but his international career has not seen the same trajectory. Agarwal, while more consistent in Test cricket, has found the ODI format challenging, especially with the rise of Gill, who has managed to carve out a more permanent role for himself in the Indian ODI team.

The stories of Shaw and Agarwal serve as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of cricketing careers. While talent is undeniable, consistency, adaptability, and sometimes, a bit of luck, play crucial roles in defining a cricketer’s longevity in the international arena.
