2 MI Players Who Should Have Been Included In The Squad For Champions Trophy 2025

Champions Trophy 2025

As the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 approaches, with all matches set to be played in Dubai, the Indian cricket team’s selection has sparked debates across the cricketing community.

Among the notable exclusions from the squad are two Mumbai Indians (MI) players, Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma, whose absence has left many fans and experts questioning the selectors’ decisions.

Suryakumar Yadav

Suryakumar Yadav, having already showcased his prowess in the ODI World Cup 2023, is a player whose exclusion from the Champions Trophy squad is particularly baffling.

Known for his 360-degree shot-making and ability to hit big shots consistently, Yadav has carved a niche for himself in the shorter formats of the game.

His knack for accelerating the innings and providing quickfire knocks when needed makes him an invaluable asset, especially in conditions like Dubai, where the ball travels well under lights.

Yadav’s performance in the 2023 ODI World Cup, although not stellar, was enough to highlight his potential. Since then, he has only sharpened his skills, becoming one of the most dynamic batsmen in T20 cricket.

His inclusion could have provided India with the luxury of having a game-changer in the middle order, capable of both anchoring the innings or shifting gears to take the attack to the opposition.

His absence means India might miss out on that explosive spark in crucial moments of the game.

Tilak Varma

The second MI player whose omission raises eyebrows is Tilak Varma. Bursting onto the T20I scene with his fearless approach and versatility, Varma has shown he can adapt to any role required.

Whether it’s playing big shots or anchoring an innings, his stats speak for themselves: in 101 matches, he has scored 3291 runs with an average of 45.70 and a strike rate of 147.51, including four centuries and nineteen half-centuries.

Varma’s style of play, characterized by his ability to score quickly across all phases of the game, would have been particularly beneficial for India in Dubai.

The conditions there are known to favor batsmen, especially in the latter part of the innings, where Varma’s skills could have been instrumental.

His left-handedness adds an extra dimension to the batting lineup, which is predominantly right-handed, offering a tactical advantage against spinners who might have dominated in Dubai’s slow pitches.

The Squad and the Selection Conundrum

The announced Indian squad for the Champions Trophy 2025 includes stalwarts like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Jasprit Bumrah, alongside promising talents like Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal.

While the selection does reflect a balance of experience and youth, the absence of players like Yadav and Varma leaves the squad somewhat lacking in certain aspects of dynamism and adaptability.

The choice to leave out Suryakumar Yadav could be seen as a cautious approach, perhaps banking on the established players’ experience in high-pressure situations.

However, in a tournament where innovation and adaptability often define the winners, Yadav’s exclusion might come to haunt the team management.

Similarly, Tilak Varma’s omission might reflect a preference for players with prior experience in similar conditions, but it overlooks the potential of a player who has shown he can adapt and perform anywhere.

Looking Ahead

As India prepares to face the challenges of the 2025 Champions Trophy, the selectors’ decisions will be under scrutiny.

The absence of these two MI players could be seen as a missed opportunity to inject fresh energy and tactical variety into the team.

Yadav’s ability to dismantle bowling attacks in the middle overs and Varma’s dual role as an aggressive or stabilizing force could have been the keys to unlocking different phases of matches.

The conditions in Dubai, with its flat pitches and generally less variable weather, favor aggressive, high-scoring cricket.

In such a scenario, having players like Yadav and Varma in the squad would have given India a broader strategic scope.

Their absence means that other players will need to step up, potentially under more pressure, to fill the gaps left by these dynamic batsmen.

The Indian squad for the 2025 Champions Trophy is formidable, the exclusion of Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma represents a strategic oversight.

Their inclusion could have provided not just depth but also the versatility needed to navigate through the unpredictable nature of T20 cricket.

Only time will tell if this decision was a gamble worth taking or an opportunity missed in the quest for international glory.
