“A lot of fans have tweeted about it since Rohit Sharma scored two double-hundreds.”
This was what Chris Gayle had to say immediately after he scored his double. Not the one to disappoint the fans, the ultimate entertainer in cricket produced another scintillating innings which even superlatives fail to do justice. The 35-year-old batsman, who has earned a reputation as one of the sport’s fiercest hitters, smashed 16 sixes (the equivalent of home runs) in his 215-run innings. His 372-run partnership with teammate Marlon Samuels also broke the previous record for any partnership in this format of the game. Here we look at five reasons why the big man’s innings was one which cannot be forgotten in a hurry:
1. Fastest Ever Double Hundred In ODI Cricket
Chris Gayle’s double hundred is the fastest ever in the history of ODI cricket. He reached that feat in 138 balls. The previous best was by Virender Sehwag off 140 balls.
2. Most Number Of Sixes
Chris Gayle equalled the record of most sixes hit in ODIs. He smashed 16 sixes in the innings, tied with Rohit Sharma and AB de Villiers.
3. First Non–Indian Batsman To Score A Double Hundred In ODI Cricket
Chris Gayle is the first non-Indian cricketer to score a double hundred in one day cricket. The others in the list include Rohit Sharma, Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar. Rohit Sharma (2) is the only batsman to score more than one double hundred in ODI cricket.
4. Exactly Five Years After Sachin Tendulkar’s Double Hundred
Gayle’s double hundred is the 5th double hundred in the history of the game. It came exactly 5 years after Sachin scored the first double hundred in ODI cricket. (24th February 2010 vs South Africa in Gwalior)
5. Highest ODI Partnership
Chris Gayle and Marlon Samuels shared a 372-run stand for the second wicket. This is a world record stand for any wicket in ODIs.
6. Tests, ODIs And T20s
Chris Gayle is the only cricketer currently to have scored a hundred in T20Is, double hundred in ODIs and a triple hundred in Tests.
7. Over 400 Sixes In ODIs
Chris Gayle becomes the second man to hit over 400 sixes in international cricket (229 ODIs, 98 in Tests and 87 in T20Is).
