South Africa was all over the West Indies today; more precisely AB de Villiers. The men from the Caribbean had yet to get over the horror of Johannesburg but the Superman from South Africa had other plans. AB de Villiers in his mid innings interview was modest enough to say that he got ‘lucky’, one can be lucky once but not time and again. One would feel that this performance by the Proteas was one full of vengeance, the humiliation against the Indians must have spurred the team to produce such a performance. Excepting AB de Villiers, there were three other batsmen who produced scores in excess of 60.
Here we look at 7 reasons why this match was one to remember for South Africa and the one for West Indies to forget:
1) Fastest 150 In ODI
AB de Villiers scored the fastest 150 in the history of the game. His 150 came off just 64 balls. The previous best was by Shane Watson who achieved this feat in 83 balls against Bangladesh in Mirpur in 2013.
2) Second Fastest Hundred In World Cup
AB de Villiers scored the second fastest hundred in World Cup (52 balls). He narrowly missed out for the fastest which is held by Kevin O’ Brien of Ireland against England in the 2011 World Cup in Bangalore(50 balls).
3) 3rd Highest Score Against West Indies
AB de Villiers has a special liking for the West Indies. All his highest scores in ODI cricket has been against the West Indians. His 162 is his highest score in ODIs too. AB de Villiers becomes the only player ever to score three hundreds against the same opponent in World Cups. He had scored hundreds against WI in 2007 and 2011 too.
4) Fastest Fifty (50), Hundred (100) And One Fifty (150)
AB de Villiers now has the fastest fifty, hundred and one fifty in one day internationals. They have all come against the West Indies.
5) First 400 In Australia
South Africa’s score of 408-5 is the highest team total in Australia.
6) 261 Off Last 20 Overs
The West Indies gave away 261 runs off the last 20 overs! It could have been another record had it been a t20 match.
7) Jason Holder’s Misery
The young 23 year old captain from the West Indies was the pick of the bowlers as far as the Proteas was concerned. He gave away 104 runs even after bowling 2 maidens! Call that some type of anticlimax!
