The year 2017 has seen the game of cricket being taken to newer levels with captains such as Smith and Kohli heralding a new era for their team in style. While India have been as dominant as ever, apart from the blip at the Champions Trophy, the other teams are still finding ways to take their top spot.
The captains of these teams play a major role in determining the success and failure of their squads and are generally paid the most. Here’s a breakdown of the fee commanded by international captains:
- Steve Smith:
While Kohli may be the most popular cricketer in the world, Steve Smith is actually the highest earning captain in the world. The Australian captain has managed to rake in nearly 10 Crores from the Cricket Australia Board.
Smith earns 9.56 crores for being the captain of the Australian team and is a great servant of the Australian team.
- Joe Root:
The English captain is the next highest earning captain in the cricketing world as he gets a whopping 8.96 crores from the English Cricket Board for leading the country. Root is another special batsman who has raised his levels.
Root has been a consistent performer and will be looking to further his legacy with a good performance in the upcoming Ashes.
- Virat Kohli:
The Indian captain earns close to 6.50 crores every year though that amount is much more when you take in all his endorsements and media and business earnings. Kohli however, does not let that get to his head and has been a consistent performer.
He has taken his game to newer levels this year with some fantastic performances and despite his loss at the CT Final, he is still India’s best hope of a great leader.
- Faf Du Plessis:
Another one of South Africa’s finest talents, Faf Du Plessis has contributed a lot to their cause over the past five to six years or so and is still doing so after taking up the captaincy role from AB De Villiers.
Faf earns a nice 3.83 crores for his role as South Africa’s captain and he is a superb athlete as well.
- Angelo Mathews:
The Sri Lankan captain is one who has to lead a very inexperienced and young squad out into the open every time they take the field. Mathews is a great player himself but has not been able to get the best out of his squad.
He earns around 2.08 crores for his role as the captain of the Sri Lankan team and has done an okay job.
