While India was cited as the favourite to lift the Nidahas Trophy, their first fixture in the tournament told a different story. In the first game of the tournament played between India and Sri Lanka, India was made to taste defeat by the hosts.
Sri Lanka ended up winning by 5 wickets after India posted a moderate total of 174 batting first. India’s batting was a tale of failures besides a great knock of 90 runs by Shikhar Dhawan
HERE ARE THE RATINGS OF THE INDIAN PLAYERS AFTER THE FIRST T20
ROHIT SHARMA: 1/10
Got out for the duck when the team wanted him to lead from the front. Got out in a very irresponsible manner in the very first over and put the team in trouble. As a captain too he did not perform that well.
Shikhar Dhawan: 9/10
Lone warrior with the bat and the reason why India reached 174. He missed out on a very well deserved century but then his knock was so crucial in taking India a total they can compete with.
Suresh Raina: 1/10
Got out for just 1 and in a very irresponsible manner. That shot was not required really especially after India had lost Rohit Sharma so early. A very irresponsible inning from Suresh Raina and he is one culprit of the match.
Manish Panday: 4/10
Played a decent cameo of 37 from 35 balls and stitched a very crucial partnership with Shikhar Dhawan to stabilise things after early jitters. Some would say that it was a knock too slow but it was still an important one for India’s chances.
Rishabh Pant: 2/10
He was badly struggling in the middle and could not get his timing right. He scored 23 from 23 balls but his slow knock resulted in India falling short of 15-20 runs India should have managed. This wasn’t the greatest of outings for him.
Dinesh Karthik: 4/10
He was unbeaten on 13 from 6 balls, did not get to bat much. Had he been promoted ahead of Rishabh Pant, maybe things would have been different. He did pretty well being the keeper too.
Washington Sundar: 5/10
His services with the bat were not required but he picked up two important wickets and gave India a chance. He picked up 2 wickets from his 4 overs having conceded 28 runs.
Vijay Shankar: 2/10
Wasn’t really among action on his debut. His services with the bat were not needed and with the ball he just bowled 2 overs. He conceded 15 runs from his 2 overs.
Yuzvendra Chahal: 6/10
He picked up two very crucial wickets when Sri Lanka was literally sailing. The two wickets he picked brought India back into the game and pulled it a little back from the hosts. He picked up 2 wickets for 37.
Shardul Thakur: 1/10
Not the greatest of days for him. He was way too expensive and conceded 27 runs in his very first over. He ended up with figures of none for 42 of 3.3 overs. He too was one real culprit of the match.
Jaydev Unadakat: 2/10
Jaydev Unadakat gave 35 from his three overs and it was, in fact, his over (18th Over) which swing things away from India. Too many runs to have any control over the game!
