Albie Morkel, the South Africa all-rounder and former Chennai Super Kings player, recently went down the memory lane to recall how MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings defeated Virat Kohli led Royal Challengers Bangalore during the 2012 edition of the Indian Premier League.
Albie Morkel, who represented Chennai Super Kings for six years, tormented the RCB bowling attack on matchday 13th of the 2012 season. Albie walked in to bat and gave a swash-buckling performance, where he had scored 28 runs off Virat Kohli’s 19th over which eventually laid the foundation of a memorable win for Dhoni & Co. at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.
However, earlier CSK were slipping from the contest before the arrival of Albie. RCB’s skipper Virat Kohli Daniel Vettori’s decision to use Kohli in the 19th over backfired when Albie Morkel smashed 3 massive sixes to help CSK bounce back to take the game away from RCB’s hands.
During an interaction with Ramani, Albie Morkel revealed:
“Look, that’s one of those evenings… once again we were out of the game. RCB had the game in their bag… I had no idea why they bowled Virat. All respect to him, he shouldn’t have bowled that over anyway. We lost a wicket in the last ball of the 18th over,”
“The 19th and 20 were left. We needed 42 (43) off 2. I walked in at No. 7. You look at the scoreboard and you’re like ‘oh no, 40-odd off 2, that’s impossible’. You walk in and then you see Virat’s bowling then I thought ‘if I can connect a few, maybe we can get close,”
The final ball thriller of the match resulted in MS Dhoni’s side chasing down the mammoth total to register a famous win over bitter-rivals RCB in the 2012 season. He added:
“I think I edged the 1st one for 4 that just missed my stumps. I edge another one just went over the short third man. I started hitting it straight and we eventually got 28 and ended up winning the match with Bravo hitting a couple in the next over,”
