As per the records and stats, team India’s squad for World Cup 2003 looked stronger than the squad for World Cup 2019. The 2003 World Cup squad was led by none other than Sourav Ganguly and included legendary players like Virender Sehwag, Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and Sourav Ganguly himself.
Though Virat Kohli’s squad looked strong with top-orders like Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli himself, but it was the strong bowling department of Ganguly’s side that made his team stand-out.
Under Sourav Ganguly’s leadership, the Indian cricket team managed to reach the final stage in 2003 World Cup but lost the trophy to Australia, on the other hand, Kohli’s squad was the favorite of everyone but the lost to New Zealand in the knockout clash in 2019 World Cup semi-final.
Recently, Sourav Ganguly interacted with Mayank Agarwal on a fun chat show ‘DadaOpensWithMayank’. During the conversation, Mayank Agarwal asked Sourav Ganguly a very interesting question, that read:
“Pick three cricketers from India’s World Cup 2019 squad you would have loved to have in your World Cup 2003 squad and give reasons?”
Responding to the same, Sourav Ganguly picked: “(Virat) Kohli, Rohit Sharma and (Jasprit) Bumrah.”
Explaining the reasons, Ganguly said: “The quality of fast bowler (Bumrah). We played in South Africa, although we bowled exceptionally well in that series. Bumrah, Rohit and Virat would be in the middle. Rohit at the top, and I at no. 3. I don’t know maybe Sehwag might be listening to this and I would get a phone call tomorrow, ‘what the hell do you think’. But I would have these three in the squad,”
“MS Dhoni also – but since you gave me three choices, I would have managed with Rahul Dravid behind the stumps, because I think he did a great job in the World Cup,”
