5 highest scores by openers in IPL when their partners at the other end got out for a duck

Be it chasing or batting first, having an opening batsman out for a duck always put a team on the back foot. Over the years, we have seen so many batsmen getting out on a duck in the Indian Premier League which has often led to a batting collapse. Though, it hasn’t always been the case.

The fans in IPL have also witnessed a complete reversal of that. Many a time, the openers went on to score a century when his partner got out for a duck. Batsmen have put on a spectacle despite the team losing quick wickets at the start. Perhaps, this is what you expect from your openers- to bail your team out from trouble and help them get over the line.

On that note, here’s a look at 5 highest scores by openers in IPL when his partner at the other end went for a duck:

5. Mathew Hayden: 89 off 58 balls against KXIP

Facing the first over of the game, S Badrinath got out the first ball off Irfan Pathan. But, this didn’t deter Mathew Hayden to have a go right from the start. The CSK opener wreaked havoc at Centurion cricket stadium against Kings XI Punjab in 2009 edition. He hit 8 fours and as many as 6 sixes en-route to his swashbuckling 89-run knock off 58 balls. His knock propelled CSK to 185 runs in 20 overs in the first innings. Dhoni and Co. eventually won that game by 12 runs.
