Chennai Super Kings had been the most consistent team in IPL history. Playing under MS Dhoni’s leadership, the team made it to the playoffs in all the ten seasons that they played before IPL 2020. They had kickstarted their IPL 2020 campaign with a win over the defending champions, Mumbai Indians. However, in the next ten games, they could record only two wins.
Unfortunately, very few CSK players have managed to impress the fans with their performances in IPL 13. The average age of the squad hurt them a lot because of the COVID-19 lockdown did not allow the players to exercise and practice as much as they would have done in a normal world. Also, there was a COVID outbreak in the CSK camp before IPL 2020. On top of that, Suresh Raina and Harbhajan Singh, two of the team’s most seasoned players, opted out of IPL 2020 because of personal reasons.
CSK had a chance to sign a match-winner as a replacement player. However, they did not prefer to go for it. The team management is reportedly unhappy with the franchise’s performance this year, and here are the five players that CSK might release before the next season.
Bought at a price of 7.80 Crores INR in the IPL Auction, Indian all-rounder Kedar Jadhav could not live up to the price tag. The former Royal Challengers Bangalore star received much support from skipper MS Dhoni and coach Stephen Fleming, but IPL 2020 did not seem to be his season.
Jadhav scored just 62 runs in eight matches. His strike rate hurt the team’s momentum, and he could not deliver the goods when the team needed him the most.
In Suresh Raina’s absence, Murali Vijay had a golden chance to revive his IPL career. The team management gave him three matches to prove himself but just like Kedar Jadhav, Vijay could not middle the ball.
The former Kings XI Punjab captain aggregated 32 runs in three innings. Ultimately, Sam Curran was preferred over him as an opener by CSK.
The Chennai Super Kings had raised a few eyebrows by signing Piyush Chawla for 6.75 Crores INR in the IPL Auction. Chawla was not at his best in IPL 2019 while playing for KKR.
Still, CSK backed him and invested in his services. Chawla played seven matches for CSK, where he could scalp only six wickets. The likes of Sanju Samson destroyed the Indian leg-spinner in IPL 2020.
MS Dhoni mentioned that he did not see the spark in his youngsters this year. One of the youngsters who did not have a great season was the South African speedster, Lungi Ngidi.
The Proteas pacer picked up four wickets in two matches, but his economy rate was 11.75. One can even say that his expensive spell against the Rajasthan Royals let the entire team down as Ngidi gave away 27 runs in just 2 balls.
Another batsman who was billed to fill in for Suresh Raina in IPL 2020 was the uncapped Indian batsman Ruturaj Gaikwad. The top-order has struggled to get going in IPL 2020.
He has only five runs to his name in three matches. While CSK will give him a few more opportunities to prove himself, it is unlikely that they might retain him before the next season.
