As many as 43 matches of IPL 2020 have been done and dusted as we approach the business end of the tournament. All the teams have put on a tough fight and are putting out their best performances to secure a place in the playoffs. Mumbai Indians are currently standing at the top of the table with 7 wins in 10 games, while Chennai Super Kings are rooted at the bottom of the table with 3 wins in 11 games.
Given that all the teams have now played at least 10 games each, we analyze their play-offs scenario in IPL 2020:
- Mumbai Indians:
Defending champions, Mumbai Indians are flying and are currently sitting at the top of the table with 7 wins in 10 games. They have secured 14 points and still have 4 games to play. While are certain to seal a place for the playoffs, they would be aiming to finish amongst the top two positions. With 4 games remaining, Rohit Sharma and Co. would be keen to win at least 2 games out of those.
2. Delhi Capitals:
Delhi Capitals finds themselves in the same boat as Mumbai Indians. They too have secured 14 points and look confident of earning a spot in the playoffs. They have played 11 matches so far and would want to win at least 2 games of out the remaining three. Delhi Capitals are scheduled to play their remaining three games against Sunrisers Hyderabad, Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore.
3. Royal Challengers Bangalore:
Royal Challengers Bangalore aren’t doing anything wrong this season. Interestingly, they are sitting at the third spot in the table with 7 wins in 10 games. With 14 points to their name, they have 4 matches to ensure themselves of a playoff spot. However, just like DC and MI, RCB would be keen to end amongst the top two positions. RCB are scheduled to play their next game against CSK on Sunday.
4. Kolkata Knight Riders:
Kolkata Knight Riders have somehow found ways to secure a place at the favourite half of the table. They have won 6 games out of eleven so far in the tournament. After registering a morale-boosting win against DC, they would be full of confidence going ahead into the tournament. They have 12 points so far and need to win 2 games out of remaining three to ensure themselves of a place in the playoffs. The win against DC has also improved their net run-rate a bit and this could help them in the end.
5. Chennai Super Kings:
Chennai Super Kings have endured the worst season in their IPL history. They are languishing at the bottom of the table with only 3 wins in 11 matches. Given that only three games are remaining, chances of making into the playoffs look bleak but not impossible.
Here’s how CSK can reach the playoffs:
For Dhoni and Co. to reach the playoffs, firstly they need to win their remaining three fixtures. With the top three teams looked assured of a place in the playoffs, CSK could become the fourth team to qualify but only if the following results go their way:
With KKR also standing at 12 points, they need to lose all their remaining games. Kings XI Punjab who have 10 points, should also lose at least 2 out of their remaining three games, while SRH and RR must lose at least one game out of remaining three.
Even if things did turn out this way, CSK need to ensure that they have a better net run-rate than all these four teams.
6. Kings XI Punjab:
After enduring a lean run, Kings XI Punjab have made a sensational comeback with four consecutive victories. They are well and truly in the race for making into the playoffs. KL Rahul and Co. have secured 10 points in 11 games. They now have to win at least two out of the remaining three to remain in contention for the playoffs. Winning all three games would guarantee them a spot in the playoffs. Given the kind of form they are in, Punjab would fancy their chances of winning at least two out of their remaining three fixtures.
7. Sunrisers Hyderabad:
Sunrisers Hyderabad would be disappointed to find themselves at sixth position in the points table with 4 wins in 11 matches. They have secured 9 points so far in the competition. They now have to win all their remaining three fixtures to remain in contention for the playoffs. Given the kind of the players they have, they aren’t going to give up just yet.
8. Rajasthan Royals :
Rajasthan Royals’ exhibited a similar performance like last year. They find themselves at seventh position in the points table with 4 wins in 11 matches. Just like SRH, Rajasthan too have 8 points and will have to win their remaining three games to remain to contention for the playoffs. Steve Smith and Co. are scheduled to play their next three games against Mumbai Indians, Kings XI Punjab and Kolkata Knight Riders. It is important to understand that even if they somehow manage to win their next three games, their negative run-rate could cause a problem for them in the end.
