During the post-match presentation, Ben Stokes, who was awarded with the Man of the Match award for his powerful performance claimed that the century was bittersweet and revealed how things are difficult right now back at his home. He revealed:
“It’s sort of bittersweet to be honest. I am bit a taken aback by why it has taken me so long to get into the tournament for the team. Things are a bit difficult right now (back at his home in NZ), but hope this has given a bit of happiness back home,”
Talking about the training sessions, he said: “To be honest, the training I’ve had yesterday was the best I had throughout my time here, so I came into this with a bit of confidence. It was coming on nicely. The harder shot to play was when they dug into the wicket and we scored off Bumrah too and a lot freer than we thought we’d be able to,”
For the unversed, Ben Stokes father is recovring from an illness in New Zealand. After making a tremendous impact with the bat last night, Stokes dedicated his performance to his father by raising his bat and doing the ‘finger’ thing as a tribute.
Well, Ben Stokes is often seeing celebrating his achievements on-field with a hand gesture in which he bends his middle finger forward so the tip cannot be seen. This is in reference to his father having to have part of that finger amputated after continuing to play when suffering an injury during his rugby league career in the 1980s. Currently, Stokes‘ father is battling with Brain Cancer. Earlier, Ben took a break from cricket to take care of his father.
