Can CSK Qualify For The Playoffs? Here’s How They Can Do It: Chennai Super Kings has so far been in a cesspool of their own in the ongoing edition of Indian Premier League. Things didn’t go as planned for the Yellow Army right since their arrival in UAE.
Right after landing in UAE, their ordeal have seemed interminable. Twelve of their staff members along with two cricketers, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Deepak Chahar tested positive for the deadly virus.
They recovered pretty well within their isolation period of just 14 days. That however, was just the tip of the iceberg.
Chennai’s problems started compounding thereafter with the departure of Suresh Raina and Harbhajan Singh leaving the camp early even before it all started.
Now coming to the numbers, Chennai have so far suffered a woeful campaign. After starting their fray with a resonating victory over Mumbai Indians, Chennai started feeling the heat.
They were undone by Rajasthan Royals in their next game, falling short by just 16 runs. Dhoni conjured some heroics deep in the innings but the game was already lost by them.
The following game saw the Yellow army being thrashed by a formidable Delhi Capitals.
The next game left them dazed and confused after Sunrisers Hyderabad bowled some cracking overs to drub CSK in a thriller by 7 runs.
They made a solid comeback in their next game, raising their fans’ hopes. They crushed Punjab by 10 wickets. However, their joys were shortlived as they were grounded by Kolkata in the very next game, failing to chase a modest 167.
They were at the end of another crackling defeat as Bangalore thumped them by 37 runs.
With five defeats from seven games, Chennai is in the seventh spot, gasping for breath. They are just one victory clear of that humiliating nadir.
The question that has already started looming in its most glaring avatar is what exactly would help Chennai qualify for the play-offs or are they already out of the equation?
Being candid, no one is out of the equation as of yet. Just the first half of the fray has been played and Chennai has notched up 4 points. Play-offs seem difficult considering the fact that 16 points from your 14 games ensures a qualification spot.
However, the tournament has seen teams qualifying at 14 points too, though it is a rare-case scenario. Ideally, Chennai will have to be very calculative from here on.
They will have seven games out of which five victories will take them to 14 points. That gives them an outright chance to make it to the play-offs, taking into consideration that other teams struggle in the tournament too.
Now, comes the equation where they went on to win 6 or 7 out of their remaining 7 matches. This will ensure their qualification for the play-offs without a doubt.
However, with the status-quo of their campaign, play-offs is already seeming to be a farcry. They have been woeful with the ball in their hand and Dhoni’s finishing has been questionable.
With Raina out of the equation, the middle order has been in arrant disarray. In order for them to beat the likes of Delhi Capitals, Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore, reaching the play-offs seem pretty questionable for them.
To make matters worse for them, they currently have a net run rate of -0.58. Not only will they have to win but the victories must be loud and resonating for them to end up in the top four.
