IPL 2020: 3 Reasons Why CSK Can Qualify For The Playoffs

CSK Can Qualify For IPL 2020 Playoffs: After CSK’s three back to back losses, a lot of people are now not backing them to reach the playoffs of IPL 2020, considering the fact that a major portion of the squad looks rusty, but realistically it’s possible for CSK to finish in the top 4 in the points table and there are strong reasons behind it.

MS Dhoni

First of all, it’s not that the CSK squad lacks quality, what it lacks is the game-time. Since most of their players are retired, they didn’t come into this tournament with a lot of cricket under their belt and it was always going to take them some time to get back to the rhythm. Now that they have played 5 matches, much more fluency and consistency can be expected from them going ahead.

CSK will get surfaces to their liking in the latter stages of the tournament

Secondly, as the tournament progresses, the conditions will change. The curators in the first half of the tournament have left a lot of grass on the pitches to prevent the surfaces from breaking which is why the spinners have not yet got into the tournament properly.

But, with the heat that is there in UAE at the moment and the amount of cricket that is being played on the same surfaces, again and again, the surfaces are bound to break in the second half and that will then bring the spinners into play.

In the games that have been played so far, CSK’s spinners have not been able to make too much of an impact at all, but if the surfaces break and the ball starts gripping and turning, they will add another dimension to CSK’s bowling attack which has looked ineffective so far.

Also, when the surfaces get spin-friendly, it will demand a different skill-set from the batsmen as well and the teams will probably require more Indian contingent in the batting department than an overseas lot because the subcontinent batsmen are certainly better in terms of handling the slow surfaces.

CSK’s middle order is built around Indian players who have spent all their lives playing on slow surfaces and have a perfect idea of how to build an innings when the ball is not coming onto the bat properly and stroke-play is not easy.

Another factor which most of the people undermine is the bench strength that CSK has got. If the pitches get spinner friendly, they have got two world-class spinners sitting on the bench at the moment in Mitchell Santner and Imran Tahir and one of them can also bat anywhere in the top 6. So, they can be brought into the mix and utilized as horses for courses.

Apart from that, CSK’s match-ups against certain oppositions give them an upper hand. They have dominated the likes of RCB, Delhi Capitals, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Kings XI Punjab a lot and they have to play a total of 5 games against this lot going ahead. So, that’s a positive as well.

Looking at CSK’s current situation in the points table, it might seem as if they will fail to reach the playoffs for the first time in the history of the IPL, but the situation can change very quickly in the next couple of weeks.
