Former Indian cricketer and cricketing expert Sanjay Manjrekar believes that Indian opener KL Rahul is extremely lucky to have made it to the Indian squad in the longest format for the tour of Australia.
Manjrekar believes that Rahul has been selected in the squad on the back of his magnificent white-ball form.
He feels that white-ball cricket is not the right parameter to select someone for the longest format, especially given that KL Rahul had a very poor red-ball form before getting dropped from the Test team.
However, Manjrekar did not directly take the name of Rahul. He took to Twitter to express what he felt and Tweeted:
“You set a bad precedent when you recall a player for Tests on IPL performance. Especially if the player has been an abject failure in his last few Tests. Whether that player succeeds or fails is irrelevant, such selections massively demotivate Ranji players.”
KL Rahul has been in terrific form in the IPL 2020 season
Kings XI Punjab skipper KL Rahul has been in terrific form in this IPL 2020 season and holds the orange cap for scoring the highest number of runs.
His brilliant captaincy has seen KXIP jump from the bottom of the table to the fourth spot on the back of five consecutive wins. This form has also seen him become the vice-captain of the Indian ODI and T20I sides in the absence of Rohit Sharma.
While Sanjay Manjrekar did not directly take the name of Rahul in his tweet, but when a fan questioned his tweet and justified Rahul’s selection in the squad, Manjrekar spoke about Rahul’s stats and took a direct dig at him.
KL Rahul in his last 5 Test series
– v SA – Avg 7.1
– v Eng – Avg 29
– v WI at home – Avg 18
– v Aus – Avg 10.7
– v WI – Avg 25.4
I say very lucky to get a recall based on IPL & white ball performance. But now let’s just hope he makes the most of this chance. Good luck to him! https://t.co/YBVbeut5jH

It will be interesting to see how KL Rahul responds to the comments made by Manjrekar. Rahul will be hopeful of answering all his critics with his bat and will be looking to make an impact in the Test series if he gets a chance.
