Throughout the glittering antiquity of the Indian Premier League, if there has been some serious reliability shown on one cricketer despite repeated failure that has been Sanju Samson. In fact, Rajasthan Royals was so pleased with mediocrity that after the sudden release of Steven Smith, they handed over the onus of the team to Sanju Samson.
Now it has always been a chequered road for the ambitious Indian wicket-keeper as he has successfully imprinted in the fabric of the tournament with a couple of fine performances but he finds it very difficult to string together a series of showdowns that can at least challenge the other wicket-keepers of the Indian cricket team.
Samson was off to a glorious start in the 2020 IPL that saw the management pinning all their hopes on the man who is slowly heading into an unheralded sunset and then what followed was a series of four single-digit scores that left the management reeling in agony.
As 2021 started, he once again left everyone in awe of him with a brilliant century in the season opener but what followed thereafter were once again desperation, humiliation, and failure on the biggest scale.
Mohammad Siraj’s fiery start helped Royal Challengers Bangalore to get off to a blinder. With the fall of three early wickets, things boiled down to the skipper in order to stabilize the ship. When Washington Sundar came over to bowl, he pranced down the pitch and smacked him for a maximum.
Not displaying any sense at all, the following ball that came from Sundar was a bit short of length and Samson dashed at it without an inkling of a clue that sent the ball flying into the safe arms of Glenn Maxwell at mid-wicket, once again forcing the decision of the management to contemplate the mistake that they have committed.
Twitter was absolutely relentless in dealing with Samson’s incessant failure and they left a barrage of vitriolic tweets to leave him scarred.
