Here’s Why Virat Kohli And Rohit Sharma Did Not Play The First Test: After a forgetful campaign at the T20 World Cup 2021, Team India made a good comeback in the T20I series against New Zealand by winning all three matches. It was also Rohit Sharma’s first series as India’s full-time T20 captain and also, Rahul Dravid’s first series as India’s head coach.
After clean-sweeping the Kiwis in T20Is, all the focus is now on the two-match Test series which started in Kanpur on 25th November. However, India’s Test captain Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have been rested for the important first Test.
Many fans have been speculating about the reasons behind their absence from the team and some fans and pundits are even unhappy about it. But, the main reason behind the decision to rest Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma is the amount of cricket these two have played in the last one and a half years.
Virat Kohli is one of the fittest cricketers in the world and he very rarely misses matches for India but it’s an exceptional case because the Indian cricket team has played three big tournament back-to-back and being in the bio-bubble has made things even more challenging. Virat has been rested for the first match, and he will join the team before the second Test.
Rohit Sharma also plays all three formats of the game for India and he has been taking the field continuously for India in the past one and a half years. Rohit couldn’t miss the T20I series because it was his first series as India’s T20I captain but he has been rested for both the Test matches ahead of the very important away Test series against South Africa.
So, the three main reasons behind resting Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are:
1) Back to back big tournaments like ICC Test Championship final, IPL (two legs), T20 World Cup.
2) The added pressure of being in a bio-bubble from past one and a half years.
3) Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have been all three formats for India continuously.
