Mumbai Indians have added Akash Madhwal to their squad for the rest of the tournament as an injury replacement for Suryakumar Yadav, who was ruled out on May 9 due to a left forearm injury. In only eight games, SKY scored 303 runs at an average of 43.28 and strike rate of 145.67.

Suryakumar had picked up the injury during Mumbai’s game against Gujarat Titans on May 6. Yadav was one of the two best batsmen for Mumbai – Tilak Varma being their star man this season – in what has been a poor tournament for the five-time champions who have registered just 3 wins in 12 matches.

Who is Akash Madhwal?

28-year-old Akash Madhwal hails from Roorkee and is a right-arm medium-fast pacer who plays for Uttarakhand. He has represented his state in 15 domestic T20 matches, wherein he has taken 15 wickets at an economy of 7.55 and an average of 26.60, having made his debut way back in 2019.

Madhwal has also featured in 6 first-class matches and 11 List-A games snapping up 22 wickets in them combined, the latest ones earlier this year in February.

Madhwal was originally part of the Mumbai support staff during the course of the season so far after being picked up at the pre-season camp. He will now be in contention to play in Mumbai’s last two fixtures that will end a forgettable season for Rohit Sharma’s side.

In a released statement, the five-time champions said: “Mumbai Indians have signed Akash Madhwal as a replacement for Suryakumar Yadav. Akash Madhwal has been with the Mumbai Indians as part of the support team and has now signed on to join the squad for the 2022 season. Akash was chosen at the MI pre-season camp to join the support team and has, over the months, demonstrated his ability with the ball, earning him the opportunity to join the squad this season.”
