A third golden duck for Virat Kohli in the ongoing IPL 2022 has now raised questions on a lot of things about the India and RCB talisman batsman – his form, his motivation, his abilities against different types of bowlers. Now, a doubt has also come over his place in India’s eleven going forward.
His utterly atrocious form in the IPL 2022, where he’s struggling to even get a start, could maybe force the Indian management to think about Kohli’s future in the T20I side.
Here are three reasons why Virat Kohli should be dropped from the T20 World Cup team:
Virat Kohli is going through a horrible patch
Having given away his captaincy last year and now his torrid rut with the bat, Virat Kohli shouldn’t be a first choice batsman in India’s T20I eleven. He’s also barely played T20 internationals since the T20 World Cup in the name of being rested. Kohli has featured in only two T20Is for India – vs West Indies – since the World Cup last year in UAE.
So, the management and selectors have to judge his form based on the IPL, where he now averages only 19 after 12 innings and has bagged three golden ducks; 6 of Kohli’s 12 innings have been single digits and two others were of 12 runs each.
Before this duck vs SRH, his two previous innings saw him score some runs but those came at a really poor strike rate – 58 off 53 vs Gujarat Titans and 30 off 33 vs Chennai Super Kings – resulting in a negative impact on his team’s total.
Other options at number 3
The best batsman for India at number is Suryakumar Yadav. SKY has been one of the best batsmen in the IPL since 2018; he’s excellent against pacers and absolutely destroys the spinners, plus SKY is a quick starter and doesn’t dot up deliveries. Since the start of 2018, batting at number 3 in T20 cricket, Suryakumar averages 30 and importantly his strike rate is 141. On the other hand, Virat Kohli in the same period has a strike rate of 131.
