3 Worst Bowling Spells In IPL History

IPL

The IPL is 15 seasons old and has seen some of the worst bowling displays in T20 cricket. While it is the batters who call the shots in a T20 game, it is the bowlers who win and lose tournaments for a side. For, the bowling performances matter a lot in the shortest format as we have seen even totals over 200 get chased down.

In its long history of the Indian Premier League, there have been some really shambolic, ordinary bowling show from Indian and overseas bowlers.

Here is the 3 worst, most expensive performances and spells in IPL history:

Basil Thampi (SRH) 0/70 vs RCB, 2018

Basil Thampi

Former SRH speedster Basil Thampi holds the record for the most expensive bowling spell in the Indian Premier League history, when he leaked 70 runs against RCB in 2018.

Thampi faced the brunt of the batting-friendly conditions at the M. Chinnaswamy stadium and an attacking RCB batting line-up wherein the duo of AB de Villiers and Moeen Ali were surreal in their touch and shots, followed by quick-fire cameos from De Grandhomme and Sarfraz Khan. RCB racked up 218 runs and 70 of which came in 4 overs of Thampi.

Yash Dayal (GT) 0/69 vs KKR, 2023

Yash Dayal

Gujarat Titans’ left-arm seamer Yash had a forgettable day against KKR in Ahmedabad in their match in Indian League 2023. What had been an ordinary first three overs from Dayal, where he conceded 38 runs in 3 overs, turned into a nightmarish 4th over as Rinku Singh smoked him for 5 sixes in a row when 28 runs were needed by KKR in 5 balls.

Ishant Sharma (SRH) 0/66 vs CSK, 2013

Ishant Sharma

The veteran India pacer Ishant had a horrific night in 2013 against CSK and in particular Suresh Raina who cracked him for multiple sixes in that game.

Ishant, who was playing under Dhoni in the national team at that time, leaked 66 runs in his 4 overs during an IPL 2013 match between SRH and CSK, a match that was played in Hyderabad. As Raina scored 99* and Hussey scored 67,  Sharma went for an economy of 16.5, making it then the most expensive spell in the IPL.
