The Chennai Super Kings are amongst the two most successful teams in the IPL. They have one title less than Mumbai Indians’ 5 IPL trophies but have been in the playoffs more times than MI.

Overall, CSK have played 210 IPL matches and won 121 of them and have a terrific win percentage of 57.86. On the way to this legacy, CSK also created some big records in the IPL.

Here are 5 major records CSK holds in the IPL:

Most appearances in playoffs

This is a well-known record in the name for Chennai Super Kings. The MS Dhoni-led team has reached the playoffs/semifinals in 11 seasons out of the 13 seasons they have participated in, missing out only in 2020 and 2022.

Despite being banned for two seasons in 2016 and 2017, CSK finished in the top 4 the most times among all franchises; this record highlights the enviable consistency of the MS Dhoni-led side.

MS Dhoni’s record for most matches as a captain

There wouldn’t be this legacy of CSK without the legend MS Dhoni. The former India captain has been with the franchise throughout – barring the two seasons when CSK were banned – and has led them spectacularly.

Dhoni handed the captaincy to Jadeja ahead of IPL 2022 but after 6 losses in 8 matches, Jadeja stepped down, giving it back to Dhoni. IPL 2023 is all but certain to be the last IPL season for MS Dhoni.

Talking about this record, unsurprisingly, MS Dhoni has captained the most matches in the IPL. Dhoni has led CSK in a record 219 IPL matches, winning 132 of them; Dhoni also led Rising Pune Supergiant in 2016 in 14 matches, winning just 5.

Lowest total defended

During the 2009 IPL season, which happened in South Africa, CSK defended 116 runs against Kings XI Punjab in Durban.

Veteran spinner Muthiah Muralidaran spun a web around the Punjab batters and returned with stunning figures of 2/8 in 4 overs. Thilan Thushara, R Ashwin and Suresh Raina – all three also took two wickets each. All of theirs combined bowling effort allowed Punjab to score only 92 runs, handing Punjab an embarrasing 24-run defeat. This record of lowest successful defence by CSK remains till date in the IPL.

Most wickets in an IPL season for a bowler: CSK’s Dwayne Bravo

In 2013, CSK reached the final of the IPL but los the final to Mumbai Indians, who won their maiden IPL trophy, by 23 runs. They had topped the points table with 11 wins in 16 matches and were once again a dominant force with the ball.

Dwayne Bravo was Dhoni’s main man with the ball throughout the tournament as the West Indian seamer snapped up a record 32 wickets in 2013 IPL. This record of 32 wickets in a single season by Bravo has not been surpassed yet, though RCB’s Harshal Patel equalled the tally of 32 dismissals in IPL 2021.

Most apperances in the IPL Final

Last, but not the least. CSK have played most number of finals in the IPL – 9! Yes, of the 11 times they have reached the playoffs, CSK have reached the final NINE times, missing out only in 2009 and 2014. They have, though, won 4 finals out of 9, and lost 3 of them to Mumbai Indians alone after having beaten them in 2010; they lost to RR in 2008 and KKR in 2012. CSK won their titles in 2010, 2011, 2018 and 2021.
