IPL: Marcus Stoinis hammered Sheldon Cottrell and Chris Jordan, in the end, to rack up a wondrous half-century that came within just 20 deliveries making him the player to share a second-fastest half-century place alongside the likes of Sehwag. It was this innings that changed the complexion of the entire game.
However, the majority of those runs came in the final over bowled by Chris Jordan as he took out the English medium pacer for a whopping 30 runs, making him a part of an infamous club that reeks of the costliest final overs in the history of the IPL. We will look at the five costliest final overs in the tournament history.
Chris Jordan – 30 runs
It was in today’s game when Stoinis went absolutely berserk to slaughter the English medium pacer. Stoinis started the proceedings with a massive sixer smoked into the stands followed by a wide that drifted miles away. The next delivery took a thick outside edge to roll on to the fence. He was just beginning to open the face of his hammer as he blasted the following delivery for another boundary over fine leg in his first match of IPL 2020. The next ball flew to the fence too, making life a living nightmare for Jordan.
The next ball was smoked into the stands as Stoinis reached his half-century in style. Trying to swing his bat again in the last delivery he ended up running himself out, however, much to the astonishment of everyone, it was a no-ball. Nortje did a decent job to place the ball in no man’s land as they stole three runs of the last delivery making it 30 of the last over and Delhi amassed 157 for 8 in the end.
Ashoke Dinda – 30 runs
The man who led the onslaught upon Dinda was Hardik Pandya of Mumbai Indians as he went ballistic and took Dinda to the cleaners in the IPL. He smashed four sixes and a boundary and stole two runs to make it 30 off the final over. Mumbai was not really looking good until that cursed over was bowled that also flipped the fortunes of the game. Despite trying various length and pace, Pandya showed no remorse and relent and smacked Dinda with zero mercy.
David Hussey – 27 runs
Things looked pretty decent until then for Kings XI Punjab who pushed Mumbai to a middling score as they were stationed at 147 for 3 from 19 overs. The Kings XI skipper, David Hussey introduced himself to bowling, planning an unorthodox coup against Rohit Sharma. Unfortunately, this affront didn’t really sit well with the current Indian vice-captain and he danced down the track and consigned him to different corners of the park for three massive sixes, following them with a boundary on the last ball which would eventually prove to be the difference between the two sides.
Rahul Shukla – 27 runs
An unheralded Jharkand seamer with shouldered with the onus of containing an angry Yuvraj. Honestly, that was like offering the lamb to the slaughter as the Indian southpaw dispatched him to another planet with some colossal hits all over the park. Yuvraj clubbed Shukla for four massive sixes before he rolled over his arm for a wide and a no-ball, making it 27 runs from that overs.
Ashoke Dinda – 26 runs
It seems that Dinda was in a real bad shape for the final overs, as he once again got hammered for 26 runs. The man in charge of the carnage this time was none other than the South African destructor-in-chief who absolutely destroyed the former Bengal linchpin. He didn’t eye for those gigantic strikes but he smashed Dinda for some exquisite drives all around the park, completing his half-century in the final over of the game.
