Marnus Labuschagne was once the rock of Australia‘s batting order. Now, his career is hanging by a thread. This follows a slump in form that has worried selectors and fans alike. This is a massive shift for a batter who used to average over sixty. He now finds it impossible to score against top-quality pace.

Critics say his busy style at the crease has become a nervous habit. They used to see it as a quirk of his talent, but now it just ruins his focus and leads to soft dismissals. Consequently, the Australian hierarchy must make the tough call to keep him out of the Test side for a while. This forces him to find his feet again, away from the pressure of international cricket.

5 Reasons Why Marnus Labuschagne Must Be Dropped For His Own Good:

1. The Statistical Precipice

Numbers don’t lie in Test cricket. Labuschagne’s recent stats show a player in a serious hole. His average over the last eighteen months has dipped below thirty. This is a world away from the years when he looked like he would never get out. This long dry spell suggests that opposition bowlers have worked him out. Meanwhile, Marnus Labuschagne hasn’t found a way to respond. This leaves him struggling and out of runs in the vital number three spot.

2. Disintegration of Judgment

The best part of Marnus Labuschagne’s game was how well he knew which balls to leave outside off stump. However, that confidence has vanished. His dismissal against Jasprit Bumrah in Perth showed a man who didn’t know where his off stump was. He inexplicably let a ball go that crashed into his pads. A top-order batter can’t make mistakes like that. The team risk ruining his confidence for good if they keep playing him while his head isn’t in the right place.

3. The “Gully” Obsession

Former teammates have pointed out a clear technical problem. Marnus Labuschagne keeps poking balls straight to the gully. This has gone from a one-off mistake to a predictable way of getting out. It shows his hands are too hard and he’s lost his touch against the moving ball. International bowlers will keep bowling in that area and wait for the edge. He has to fix this technical glitch in domestic cricket first.

4. Josh Inglis Factor

Australian cricket has plenty of players ready to step in. These players are banging down the door with mountains of runs. Talents like Josh Inglis have shown they have the temperament for Test cricket. Keeping them out just to protect a struggling veteran makes no sense. Giving these hungry players an opportunity makes the squad deeper. It also proves that players can’t just rely on their names to keep their spots.

5. The Necessity of a Shield Reset

History shows that getting dropped can be the best thing for a player’s career. We saw this with Usman Khawaja and Matthew Hayden. Marnus Labuschagne needs a full season of Sheffield Shield cricket. This will let him go back to basics without the massive pressure of a Test series. Playing domestic cricket will make him value his wicket again. He can rebuild his game and come back as a much tougher cricketer.
