Vinod Kambli, once hailed as the next big thing in Indian cricket, had a career that failed to live up to its early promise. Here are five reasons why:

  1. Inconsistent Performance: Kambli started his Test career with a bang, scoring two double centuries and two single ones in his first seven Tests. However, his form dipped dramatically after that, and he averaged only 22.38 in his last 10 Tests without a single century. This inconsistency in performance was a major factor in his ouster from the Indian team.
  2. Weakness Against Short Balls: Kambli’s technique was found wanting against the short ball. West Indian quicks, in particular, exploited this weakness to devastating effect. This was a major factor in his Test career ending prematurely at the age of 24.
  3. Off-Field Issues: Kambli’s off-field issues also played a part in his downfall. He was known for his flamboyant lifestyle and was often in the news for the wrong reasons. His behavior and attitude were seen as unprofessional and detrimental to the team environment.
  4. Lack of Support: Kambli did not have the right mentor to help him overcome his challenges. He was often left to fend for himself, and this lack of support and guidance was a significant factor in his failure to make it big.
  5. Politics and Poverty: Some have pointed to politics and poverty as reasons for Kambli’s failure. However, these factors are difficult to quantify and are often used as excuses. While they may have played a role, Kambli’s own shortcomings were the primary reasons for his failure.
