It’s always the dream of a batsman to score a Test match hundred for his country and then possibly stretch it to a double hundred, but there have been a few batsmen in the history of Test cricket who have managed to score a hundred and a double hundred in the two innings of the same Test match.

Here are the 7 batsmen who scored a hundred and a double hundred in the same Test match –

#1 Doug Walters:

Doug Walters was the first ever batsman to do this. The Australian right-hander scored 242 runs in the first innings of a Test match against West Indies played at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG).

Walters then got to the three figure mark in the second innings again, scoring 103 runs.

#2 Sunil Gavaskar:

The second in the list is the Indian legend Sunil Gavaskar. He is the only Indian ever to be able to score a hundred and a double hundred in the same Test match.

Gavaskar, like Walters, also did it against West Indies and that too in his debut Test series in 1971. The little master scored 124 in the first innings and 220 in the second innings.

#3 Lawrence Rowe:

Lawrence Rowe was a West Indies batsman who did it against New Zealand in a Test match which was played at Sabina Park, Kingston.

Rowe, who played a total of 30 Test matches for West Indies and scored more than 2000 runs at an average of over 40, scored 214 and 100 in the first and the second innings of that Test match against New Zealand respectively.

#4 Greg Chappell:

Greg Chappell scored a double hundred and a hundred in the same Test match at Basin Reserve in New Zealand in 1974.

Basin Reserve is one of the toughest places to bat in Test match cricket as the ball swings and seams a lot at that venue, but Chappell put on an absolute exhibition of Test match batting, scoring 247 and 133 in the two innings respectively.

#5 Graham Gooch:

Graham Gooch actually scored a triple hundred and a hundred in one Test match. It was against India in 1990 at Lord’s where Gooch scored 333 runs in the first innings before inflicting more damage on India by scoring another hundred in the second innings.

#6 Brian Lara:

Brian Lara was a class player against spin bowling and he showed that against the very potent Sri Lankan spinners at the Sinhalese Sports Club in 2001 where he scored 221 and 130 in the two innings respectively.

His double hundred in the first innings of that game was probably one of the best knocks ever played by an overseas batsman in Sri Lanka.

#7 Kumar Sangakkara:

Kumar Sangakkara was another player, just like Graham Gooch, who scored a triple hundred in the first innings of a Test match before scoring a hundred in the second innings.

Sangakkara achieved this feat in the twilight of his career, playing against Bangladesh in Chittagong in 2014. The southpaw scored 319 in the first innings and 105 in the second innings.
