10000 test runs speak of class and character. Test still continues to be the purest form of cricket and needless to say that every youngster’s ultimate dream is to get himself a test debut.
While some legends could reach the milestone, there were a few legends who fell just marginally short from entering the elite club of 10000 test runs. Here are 7 such legends.
- Graeme Smith
The former South African Skipper was a legend indeed. He’s one of the best batsman to have ever played for South Africa. He would have loved to reach the 10000 run mark in test cricket but he could not. He finished with 9265 runs from 117 matches.
- Inzamam Ul Haq

He did get himself an entry in the elite 10000 club for ODIs and he would have loved to do that in tests as well. But he couldn’t as he fell short of just a few runs. He managed to score 8830 runs from 120 matches. Had he reached 10000 Test runs he would have been a part of the elite club with 10000 runs in both tests and ODIs.
- Javed Miandad
Another legendary batsman from Pakistan. Javed Miandad too miss’s out on the milestone. Before his career came to an end he scored 8832 runs from 124 matches.
- VVS Laxman
The very very special Laxman has played some fantastic innings for India in test cricket. We would have loved to see him reach the milestone but he couldn’t. He finished his career with 8781 runs from 134 games.
- Michael Clarke
Clarke was one of the finest Aussie batsmen ever. He scored 8643 runs from 114 test matches and couldn’t reach the milestone.
- Mathew Hayden
He’s one of the best openers ever to play for the Aussies. Hayden was a strong batsman and he scored 8625 runs from 103 games.
- Virender Sehwag
Sehwag was the first Indian batsman to score a triple century. He had his one style of batting and the format never really mattered. Sehwag too couldn’t reach the 10000 test runs mark. His career terminated at 8586 runs from 104 matches.
