Had the Netherlands thought that they had avoided a lot of danger when David Warner got out in the 40th over after scoring 104 runs, they had no idea what storm in the name of Glenn Maxwell was going to hit them.
Glenn Maxwell had come in at the 39th over and tore into the Dutch bowlers to crack the world record for the fastest ODI World Cup century, reaching the milestone in only 40 balls, beating the record previously held by Aiden Markram in 49 balls earlier this month.
It is no surprise that Aiden Markram had also set the record at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi and Glenn Maxwell broke Markram’s record here as well today as the Delhi surface has produced high-scoring matches in the World Cup 2023 after being relaid after the IPL earlier this year.
Glenn Maxwell was simply out of the world today with his shots behind the wicket and square off it. He mauled each and every Netherlands bowler who came in his line to wallop 9 fours and 8 sixes and finish on 106 runs in 44 balls.
What earlier seemed like Australia would reach a total of around 350 when they were 290/6 in 43 overs was then propelled to 399 by Maxwell’s freak show.
This also meant that pacer Bas de Leede now holds the record for the most expensive bowling figures in ODI cricket – Bas de Leede leaked 115 runs in his 10 overs!
Twitter erupted with hilarious memes as Glenn Maxwell smashed Netherlands:

After his sensational innings, Glenn Maxwell said: Feels pretty good. I’ve been pretty cooked all day. Probably just cleared my head a bit to just go out and play. The situation when Davey and Greeny got out, I had to take it deep a little bit. Patty was good as well. Even if they are banging it into the wicket, I feel I have enough time to go after it. And when they are bowling quick, my hands have to be faster. Just generally try to get it over the infield.
