India captain Rohit Sharma had to be rushed to a hospital amid a massive injury scare for the opener. He had to leave the field in just the second over of the 2nd ODI against Bangladesh in Dhaka.

The 2nd ODI at the Shere Bangla National Stadium kicked off on Wednesday, with Bangladesh skipper Litton Das opting to bat first. The hosts lead the series 1-0 after winning the 1st ODI on Sunday via a late miraculous 10th-wicket stand of 51* runs between Mehidy Hasan and Mustafizur Rahman.

Ban vs Ind 2nd ODI - India captain Rohit Sharma goes for x-ray after hurting thumb

Here is why Rohit Sharma was taken to the hospital:

Rohit Sharma suffered a blow on his thumb while fielding in the second over. Batsman Anamul Haque outside edged a delivery from Mohammed Siraj that was outside the off-stump. The ball flew low straight to Rohit Sharma at second slip but the Indian captain couldn’t quite hang onto it.

Not only Sharma spilled the catch, but also did his thumb and webbing, and there was some blood too seen. He grimaced in pain and immediately left the field. The BCCI later announced that Sharma was taken to a hospital for further scans on his thumb and hand webbing. It is also unlikely that Sharma will come out to bat at his regular opening position.

“Update: India Captain Rohit Sharma suffered a blow to his thumb while fielding in the 2nd ODI. The BCCI Medical Team assessed him. He has now gone for scans,” the BCCI said.

Rajat Patidar came on as the substitute fielder while KL Rahul, the vice-captain, took over the interim captaincy duties.

Earlier Liton Das won the toss and opted to bat. The hosts made one change: Hasan Mahmud replaced Nasum Ahmed, while India made two changes: now fit-again Axar Patel replaced Shahbaz Ahmed and Kuldeep Sen has gone down with back stiffness, replaced by Umran Malik.

Teams:

India (Playing XI): Rohit Sharma(c), Shikhar Dhawan, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul(w), Washington Sundar, Axar Patel, Shardul Thakur, Deepak Chahar, Mohammed Siraj, Umran Malik

Bangladesh (Playing XI): Najmul Hossain Shanto, Litton Das(c), Anamul Haque, Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim(w), Mahmudullah, Afif Hossain, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Nasum Ahmed, Ebadot Hossain, Mustafizur Rahman
