India captain Rohit Sharma holds a legendary status when it comes to ODI cricket and white-ball cricket. On Sunday, the Indian opener took down former captain Mohammad Azharuddin’s big record in ODIs to further assert this position as one of the greatest ODI batters of all time.
In the first ODI match against Bangladesh at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka, Rohit Sharma scored 27 runs off 31 balls to give India a quick start, which, however, fizzled away as Shakib Al Hasan took a five-wicket haul and the Indian batters couldn’t really stick around.
Nonetheless, with this knock of 27 runs, Rohit Sharma has now gone past Mohammad Azharuddin’s ODI runs tally of 9378 runs that he’d amassed in 308 innings at an average of 36 with the help of 7 centuries and 58 fifties.

Rohit Sharma now has scored 9403 runs in 227 innings in ODIs, at an average of 48 having slammed 29 centuries and 45 fifties. He is also the first and only batsman to hit three double centuries in ODI cricket.
Legendary batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar leads the list of leading run scorers for India in ODIs with 18426 runs from 452 innings. Tendulkar hit 49 ODI tons and 96 half-centuries, and is followed by Virat Kohli, who has scored 12353 runs in 263 matches at a terrific average of 57 with 43 centuries to his name. Former Indian captains Sourav Ganguly (11221 from 308 ODIs at 40), Rahul Dravid (10768 from 340 matches at 39), and MS Dhoni (10599 from 347 at 50) are the next in line in ODI cricket among Indians in the top 5.
Meanwhile, Team India find themselves in a grave situation at 156/8 after Shakib’s five-wicket haul. KL Rahul, batting at number 5, is waging a battle with a fifty. India have also made questionable selection calls, playing just two spinners – in Bangladesh! – and three pacers – in Bangladesh! – and their batting also seems lighter with Sundar at 6 and Shahbaz at 7.
