Chennai Super Kings – Daryl Mitchell
Though Daryl Mitchell came at an expensive price of INR 14 crore, CSK were determined to get him, because Mitchell fills the shoes of two players: all-rounder Ben Stokes and number 4 batsman Ambati Rayudu. Mitchell was in sensational form during the World Cup, racking up over 500 runs. He can give 2 overs in the middle overs.
Mumbai Indians – Gerald Coetzee
South Africa’s Gerald Coetzee was MI’s first pick in the auction and their best buy. The young fast bowler has raw pace, aggression, and can hit a few big boundaries. Gerald Coetzee was South Africa’s best bowler in the World Cup with 20 wickets in 8 games.
Royal Challengers Bangalore – Lockie Ferguson
RCB had a bizarre IPL 2024 Auction and perhaps the worst of all 10 franchises. If their best pic in the auction seems to be Lockie Ferguson, then you can imagine how their fans must be feeling right now. Anyway, Ferguson is an experienced campaigner and one of the fastest bowlers in the world. The only issue with him is his fragile fitness.
Delhi Capitals – Harry Brook
Harry Brook had only one good game last season for SRH – but in that game, he struck a stunning century. He’s been sensational for England in Tests and T20Is so far. He has a strike rate of 145 in 25 T20I innings. There is so much to learn for the 24-year-old and he will only get better with age and experience. Getting Brook for 4 crore was a good deal for DC.
Punjab Kings – Harshal Patel
Harshal Patel, the Purple Cap winner of IPL 2021, had an ordinary season for RCB in 2023 and hence he was released. But, he went for 11.75 crore in the IPL 2024 auction, bought by Punjab Kings. Harshal knows the Indian conditions very well. The big ground dimension in Mohali would suit his bowling of slower variations.
Kolkata Knight Riders – Mitchell Starc
Yes, KKR had to pay a huge amount of INR 24.75 crore for Mitchell Starc. But he was the best and most experienced fast bowler in the auction. Starc is one of the deadliest new ball and death overs bowlers in the world. Despite the exorbitant price, KKR have secured their bowling spearhead.
Sunrisers Hyderabad – Wanindu Hasaranga
Which four overseas players will be picked and benched at SRH is anyone’s guess now. But Wanindu Hasaranga has a strong case for his inclusion. He was in the running for Purple Cap in 2022. He was surprisingly bought for only 1.5 crore by SRH. Hasaranga has been on top of the T20I bowling rankings earlier and is a powerful finisher.
Rajasthan Royals – Rovman Powell
RR have strongly addressed their issue of finishing lower down the order by buying Rovman Powell. Last season Parag and Holder failed to deliver, so RR bought Powell for a good price. Powell, who is one of the best death-overs hitter, can also bowl medium pace.
Gujarat Titans – Shahrukh Khan
GT must be really disappointed with themselves. Despite going in the auction with the biggest purse, they failed to buy either Starc, Cummins, or Daryl Mitchell. In fact, they returned with a washed-out Umesh and plenty of inexperienced players. Shahrukh Khan, bought for 7.4 crore, seems their best pick in the IPL 2024 Auction. But Shahrukh will need to level up his finishing in the IPL.
Lucknow Super Giants – David Willey
The most experienced name in the LSG picks in this auction is David Willey, who has recently retired from international cricket to focus on T20 cricket. Willey, who can batter anywhere in the order, is a genuine wicket-taking option in the powerplay.
