Watch: “Super Talent” – Nasser Hussain Picks Shubman Gill As A Future Legend

24-year-old India opener Shubman Gill had a fantastic 2023, which prompted former England captain Nasser Hussain to predict him as a future superstar. Gill ended 2023 as the leading international and ODI run-scorer of the year, despite a little slump in the past couple of months.

Shubman Gill had a breakthrough year in international cricket. After cementing his position over Shikhar Dhawan by the end of 2022, he started the year with a bumper ODI double century and a maiden T20I century, both vs New Zealand, followed by a Test hundred against Australia in Ahmedabad. He was the Orange Cap winner in the IPL and then cracked a ton against Bangladesh on a tough surface in Colombo.

The right-handed India opener finished the year with 1584 ODI runs at 63, and overall in international cricket, he scored 2154 runs at 46, notching up 7 centuries and 10 fifties.

Gill suffered a slight dip in form after getting dengue. He still managed 354 runs in the World Cup at an average of 44 and a strike rate of 106.

Speaking with the ICC, Nasser Hussain was asked to pick the future legends from the current crop of youngsters. His first name was Shubman Gill.

Hussain said: “The men, I am going to go with Shubman Gill. I think he had a very good three-quarters, nine-tenths of 2023. He must have learned so much having the likes of Rohit Sharma at the other end. It just fell away maybe at the end. Maybe that illness just got to him a little and his form (dipped) just in a month. We take it far too short when we are in the broadcasting world. He’s a super talent and he’s going to be the next sensation for India for years to come. So hopefully, he’ll have a good 2024.”

The other name that Hussain opted for was New Zealand’s Rachin Ravindra, who had a stellar World Cup 2023, amassing 578 runs at an average of 64 with 3 centuries.

“Going into that World Cup, I’d seen him in England a bit. He came in at Lord’s down the order and smashed it around and I thought, crikey, he can play. And then, they moved him up to the top of the order and he was a revelation. So, Rachin Ravindra, hopefully he can continue his progression,” Hussain added.
