OTD In 2011: Rohit Sharma Fans Celebrate 13-Year Anniversary With Mumbai Indians

On Monday, January 8, Rohit Sharma and Mumbai Indians and their fans celebrated the 13-year anniversary of the association between the Nagpur-born player and the Ambani-owned franchise.

Mumbai Indians bought Rohit Sharma for INR 9.2 crore in the IPL 2011 auction on this day a dozen years ago.

In 2013, with the team struggling under the captaincy of Ricky Ponting, the management decided to name Rohit as their new skipper mid-season. That moment became the turning point in Mumbai Indians’ history. Rohit came in as the fortune changer for MI.

Until 2012, MI had reached only one final and lost it to CSK in 2010. It all changed as soon as Rohit Sharma was promoted to the captaincy role mid-season in 2013. He instantly delivered them a trophy, taking revenge for the 2010 final loss by defeating MS Dhoni’s team in the 2013 final.

Rohit and MI just got started there. They won the 2013 Champions Trophy title, defeating Rajasthan Royals in the final. Then MI went on a winning spree, winning IPL titles in 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020.

After failing to reach playoffs in IPL 2021 and 2022, Rohit charged MI to playoffs in IPL 2023 despite in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah and Jofra Archer. MI lost in Qualifier 2, one step away from the final.

The legacy of Mumbai Indians has been built under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma. However, things might be a bit sour right now among all parties involved as MI replaced Rohit as the captain with Hardik Pandya, soon after trading back Pandya from the Gujarat Titans.

MI posted a tweet for Rohit, and captioned it: “#OnThisDay, 13 years ago, Rohit turned Blue & Gold”

Fans of Rohit Sharma celebrated his 13-year anniversary with Mumbai Indians:

Even though Rohit isn’t the captain of the Mumbai Indians anymore, it seems that the BCCI and management wish to continue with Rohit Sharma as the skipper for the T20 World Cup 2024. Sharma, along with Kohli, will make his T20I comeback, after 13 months, in the upcoming T20I series against Afghanistan.
