Pushing aside the disappointments of the group-stage exit in the T20 World Cup 2022 at home a week ago, Australia started the 3-ODI series against England with a 6-wicket win in Adelaide.

Dawid Malan’s tenacious century dragged England to a total of 287 after England was 66/4 and then 118/5 at Jos Buttler’s wicket. In reply, for Australia, the top three of David Warner, Travis Head, and Steve Smith all scored half-centuries – and dominating ones giving England little chance of a fightback – and helped Australia scale down the target with three overs to spare.

Warner (86 off 84) and Travis Head (69 off 57) rumbled on a 147-run opening stand – Head opening now after Aaron Finch’s retirement from ODI – in less than 20 overs, before Steve Smith (80* off 78) ensured Australia remained on the track to complete the chase despite three quick wickets.

It wasn’t really a large crowd at the Adelaide Oval, but some passionate cricket fans did make their presence felt. A group of young fans put up posters asking for jerseys from their heroes. One young lad requested David Warner for his t-shirt, and then another asked Marnus Labuschangne for his jersey.

The fan held a page that read, “David Warner, can I have ur (sic) shirt?”

After watching this, Warner, who was sitting inside the dressing room, told the fan to get one shirt from Labuschagne. “Get one off Marnus,” Warner wrote and showed it on the big screen.

Another fan sitting beside quickly wrote up the same request from Marnus.

David Warner then gestured for the ground officials to bring this young fan to him.

David Warner then took to his Instagram story and promised this young fan a t-shirt in the upcoming home Test summer.

The second ODI between the two sides will be played at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Saturday. Australia will aim to clinch the series while England will look to level the series.
