Indian captain Rohit Sharma, who failed to make it big with the bat in India’s tournament-opening match against arch-rivals Pakistan, roared back into the form and registered a sensational half-century against the Netherlands at Sydney Cricket Ground. He played a stunning knock to help the Indian side post a total of 179 runs on the scoreboard and also went on to break a few records. However, on social media, he kickstarted a meme-fest after a few pictures of him, giving hilarious expressions, went viral on the internet.
After electing to bat first, the Indian side was off to a slow start to their innings as they received an initial setback in the form of opener KL Rahul who departed with just nine runs off 12 deliveries. Rohit Sharma then formed a partnership with Virat Kohli.
Rohit and Virat soon took the Dutch bowlers to the cleaners with their explosive shots. Rohit Sharma registered a stunning 50 as he and Kohli stitched a 73-run stand for the second wicket. While Hitman was hitting some stunning shots, Kohli was playing the role of second-fiddle to him. Later, SKY and Kohli took team India to the winning side. Rohit was dismissed after scoring 53 off 39 balls and his knock consisted of four boundaries and three sixes.
During his knock, Rohit surpassed former all-rounder Yuvraj Singh to hit the most sixes in ICC T20 World Cup history by an Indian player. He also became the second-highest six-hitting batter in the tournament’s history in the process. He surpassed Sri Lankan great Tilakaratne Dilshan to become the fourth-highest run scorer in the tournament’s history. Rohit now has 904 runs in 35 matches in 32 innings at an average of 37.66. He has smashed nine half-centuries in the tournament, with his best individual score being 79*.
