It was chaos in the middle of the MCG, in the stands, and on social media as chase master Virat Kohli drove India to a memorable win in a thrilling encounter against Pakistan to kick start their T20 World Cup 2022 campaign in a stunning fashion.
Virat Kohli played what he himself, Rohit Sharma, Sachin Tendulkar, and many said was his best knock in the blue jersey to steer India home after at a point they had looked down and out.
Chasing 160 on a fast, pacy, bouncy MCG surface against a tearaway fast bowling trio of Shaheen Afridi, Haris Rauf, and Naseem Shah, India fell to 31/4 and were 54/4 at the 11-over mark before Hardik Pandya and Virat Kohli started changing the gears.
The pair first hit three sixes in an over to Nawaz and collected a boundary each in the next three overs. Haris Rauf and Naseem Shah then delivered two tight overs to leave India needing 48 in the last 3 overs and swung the pendulum largely in favor of Pakistan.
With Hardik Pandya struggling to hit the hard lengths of the fast bowlers, it even looked worse for India’s chances. But then stepped up Kohli, like only Kohli has done over the past decade: using his gift of timing and placement with the incredible power in his wrists.
He carved out three boundaries off Shaheen Afridi’s over and then clattered Rauf for two sixes to bring the equation down to 16 runs needed in the last balls. The last over by Nawaz was as dramatic as it could get: Hardik was out the first ball, and when Kohli got the strike, he hit a six off a no-ball. On the free hit, Nawaz bowled Kohli but the ball went to the vacant third man and the batters ran three byes.
With 2 runs needed off the last ball, Nawaz bowled a wide to Ashwin, who then hit a lofted shot over mid-off and sprinted for a single and seal the victory. Kohli was named the Player of the Match for his brilliantly calculated 53-ball 82.
Arshdeep Singh was India’s star with the ball with a three-for, including wickets of Babar and Rizwan; Pandya also took three wickets.
As usual, Twitterati trolled the Pakistani team as India avenged their loss from last year’s T20 World Cup.
