A trophy on the field has heightened Royal Challengers Bangalore’s (RCB) already successful social media game as the franchise broke and created a new record for the fastest 1 million likes on Instagram for an account in India.
Soon after Smriti Mandhana’s team sealed the WPL 2024 trophy, by beating Delhi Capitals by 8 wickets at the Arun Jaitley stadium, RCB posted an Instagram post that gained 1 million likes in only 9 minutes.
This is now the fastest Insta post by an Indian account to gain 1 million likes, breaking the record of one of Virat Kohli’s posts that had hit 1 million Insta likes in 10 minutes.
Among the top 7 fastest Insta posts to garner 1 million likes, five of them belong to Virat Kohli, one to Big Boss winner Elvish Yadav, but now RCB’s post for the WPL title win stands at the top. This further underlined the passionate fanbase or RCB, and also the joy among the fans in the country and worldwide at the franchise finally ending their trophy drought.

Smriti Mandhana said she and her team had learned a lot from last year’s WPL, when they finished second-to-last in the league phase. This time, they were third. RCB defeated defending champions Mumbai Indians, led by Harmanpreet Kaur, in two consecutive games to reach the final, where they thumped Meg Lanning’s Delhi Capitals, who had topped the league stage this season.
“Last year taught us a lot of things,” Mandhana said. “We spoke of what went wrong, what went right, both as player and captain. The management backed my ideas when I went to them after the tournament. They said this is your team, build it the way you want to. It’s been amazing. They’ve been through a lot as well, for them to have this trophy is also really exciting.”
Sophie Molineux bagged the Player of the Match award for her game-turning three-wicket over.
