As MS Dhoni stepped down from the position of CSK’s captaincy, Shreyas Iyer, who will lead KKR, becomes the most experienced captain in the IPL 2024.
On Thursday, only one day ahead of the start of the IPL 2024 season, MS Dhoni handed over CSK’s captaincy to opener Ruturaj Gaikwad.
This big switch in CSK’s captaincy comes after another big switch elsewhere: Mumbai Indians, too, will have a new captain in Hardik Pandya. Pandya was traded in from Gujarat Titans and was immediately made the new MI skipper, ending the decade-long captaincy tenure of Rohit Sharma. This also means that the only two captains who have won five IPL trophies – MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma – won’t be the skippers from now.
Shreyas Iyer becomes the most experienced captain in IPL 2024

With MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma not being the captains anymore, KKR captain Shreyas Iyer is now the most experienced skipper in IPL 2024.
Shreyas Iyer first led in the IPL in 2018 – he was given the captaincy of Delhi Daredevils when Gautam Gambhir decided to step down mid-season. Iyer has led Delhi and KKR from 2018 to 2022 – he missed IPL 2023 due to back injury.
Iyer has captained in 55 IPL games so far in his career, winning 27 and losing 26 and a couple of games ending in a tie.
Behind Shreyas Iyer is KL Rahul, who has led Punjab Kings and Lucknow Super Giants in 51 IPL matches in his career so far.
Meanwhile, Iyer is in doubt for the initial games of KKR this season because of some back problems that he suffered during the Ranji Trophy final, where he didn’t field for the last two days of the game.
He has, though, joined the KKR squad in Kolkata. If Iyer isn’t fit to play, Nitish Rana will lead the side in his absence. KKR’s first match of the season is against SRH on Saturday night.
