List Of Major Injuries Jasprit Bumrah Has Suffered In Recent Years

Even though the selectors, management and the doctors had been taking extra caution when it came to the workload management of Jasprit Bumrah, they couldn’t prevent the fast bowler from his latest injury, which has meant that the Men In Blue will be without their spearhead seamer at the T20 World Cup, starting later this month in Australia.

It had already been reported earlier about Jasprit Bumrah’s back injury and his missing the T20 World Cup, before the BCCI President Sourav Ganguly and head coach Rahul Dravid gave some optimism. However, it didn’t take long to confirm the seriousness of the injury, and on Monday the BCCI officially announced that Bumrah has been ruled out of the marquee tournament in Australia.

Bumrah had earlier missed the Asia Cup 2022 also because of the same back injury. He was then declared fir for T20Is against Australia. But, seems like he was rushed back into the side as after only two T20Is, the injury flared up again and he is expected to miss months of action.

Jasprit Bumrah, India’s all-format fast bowler, has sustained some major injuries in recent years, mostly since his workload increased after he made his Test debut in 2018.

Here are the list of major injuries Jasprit Bumrah has sustained in recent years:

Some matches could always be avoided for important players. Such as a T20I against Ireland before the important tour of England. Playing in Malahide, Bumrah sustained a thumb injury, later revealed to be a fracture, on his left thumb while attempting a return catch.

This fracture meant Bumrah missed the 3 T20Is and 3 ODIs against England and also the first two Tests against England, both of which India lost! His return in the third Test straightaway brought India to victory as he snapped a five-for. In three Tests on what was only the second Test series of his career, Bumrah picked 14 wickets.

In the 2019 Test series in West Indies, Bumrah became only the third Indian to pick a Test hat-trick after Harbhajan Singh and Irfan Pathan. However, after returning home, it was learned that Bumrah was starting to have back issues, the first time of such severity, that he then missed what would have been his first Test season in India – series against South Africa and Bangladesh. He then went to the UK for treatment on the lower back stress fracture.

He missed international cricket for three months but made a return for the 2020 Test series in New Zealand.

This was an on-field injury that he suffered while fielding during the third Test in Sydney, in January 2021. It came at a worse time as Ishant, Shami and Umesh had already been ruled out due to injuries before this Test. At the Gabba Test then, India went with a bowling attack comprising Siraj, Saini, Shardul, Natarajan and Sundar!

This is the latest injury setback for Bumrah and India. He was bowling full throttle during the July tour of England. He was then rested from the West Indies tour, but the first concerns of his back injury came when he was ruled out of the Asia Cup due to “back spasms”.

After a month of rehab, he was deemed fit to face Australia but surprisingly was omitted from the first T20I with Rohit Sharma saying that they want to give some more time to the pacer to recover, which was weird because Bumrah was in the squad.

After two T20Is vs Australia, Jasprit Bumrah was ruled out of the South Africa T20I series before the gloomy news of his missing the T20 World Cup left everyone with questions and concerns.
