“Unfair” – Mohammad Kaif Speaks Against Deepti Sharma’s Decision To Run-Out Charlotte Dean

Jhulan Goswami’s last international match, and India’s 3-0 whitewash over England, is being talked about for different reasons: Deepti Sharma running out England’s Charlotte Dean at the non-striker’s end when Dean was backing up far from the bowling crease.

When 17 runs were required to win off 6.3 overs, Deepti Sharma ran into bowl to striker Freya Davies, but noticed that Dean was backing up too from the non-strikers’ crease and ran her out.

This more of run-out is completely legal and within the rights of the bowler.

Deepti Sharma was within the laws to affect the run-out

However, the Spirit of Cricket advocates popped up again and condemned Deepti and the Indian team. They even admitted that even though this is in the laws, it is against the Spirit Of Cricket.

One of them is former India batsman Mohammad Kaif who even labelled Deepti’s decision to run-out Charlotte Dean as “unfair” stating that the non-striker batter is “mentally programmed” to watch the striker at the time of the ball expectedly to be released.

“Every batter times his/her start when they are at non-striker end. After years of playing they are mentally programmed when the ball will be released as they are focusing on striker. If a bowler doesn’t release the ball it’s unfair on batter,” Mohammad Kaif tweeted.

India skipper Harmanpreet Kaur, who bagged the Player of the Series award for her 221 runs in 3 outings, was in full support of Deepti and running out of the non-striker while backing up.

“Today whatever we have done I don’t think it was any crime. It is part of the game and it is an ICC rule and I think we just need to back our player,” Harmanpreet said during her post-match press conference.

“I’m actually very happy she was aware of that, and the batter she is taking too long a stride I think. I don’t think she has done something wrong and we just need to back her. Like I said, I don’t think we have done any crime. It’s part of the ICC rules, it’s called a run-out and we’ve done that.”
