IPL 2025: Will Ricky Ponting Succeed Gautam Gambhir As KKR Mentor?

IPL 2025

The Indian Premier League (IPL) has always been a melting pot of cricketing talent, strategy, and drama, and the IPL 2025 season promises to be no different, especially with the buzz surrounding the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). Gautam Gambhir, who returned to KKR as a mentor for the 2024 season, played a pivotal role in ending the franchise’s title drought. However, with Gambhir now taking up the prestigious role of head coach for the Indian cricket team, KKR finds itself at a crossroads, looking for a new guiding light.

Ricky Ponting, the former Australian captain known for his aggressive captaincy and tactical acumen, has emerged as a frontrunner to fill the void left by Gambhir. Ponting, who was previously associated with Delhi Capitals, has hinted at his openness to return to the IPL in a coaching capacity. His sacking from Delhi Capitals after failing to secure a title, despite reaching the final in 2020, left many wondering where his strategic mind would land next.

Recent posts on X and reports from various sources suggest that KKR has shortlisted both Ricky Ponting and Jacques Kallis as potential replacements for Gambhir. Ponting’s experience, not just as a player but as a coach, makes him an attractive candidate. His time with Delhi Capitals showcased his ability to mold teams, although the ultimate prize eluded him. KKR, under the mentorship of Gambhir, showed what a blend of experience and strategy can achieve, and Ponting could potentially bring a similar, if not greater, impact.

“There might be a few opportunities coming up in IPL in the next few weeks, and we’ll see what happens,” Ponting told on Sky Sports.

“I’d love to coach again in the IPL. I’ve had a great time every year that I’ve been involved, whether that was in the early days as a player or the couple of years I had at Mumbai as head coach there,” he said on The ICC Review podcast.

“I’ve had seven seasons at Delhi, which unfortunately didn’t really work out the way that I would have wanted and certainly the way that the franchise would have wanted.”

“Me going there was all about trying to bring some silverware to the team and that didn’t happen,” he conceded.

Jacques Kallis, on the other hand, has a historical connection with KKR, having played a crucial role in their earlier championship wins. His return as a mentor could provide a sense of continuity and familiarity, leveraging his all-round cricketing knowledge.

The choice between Ponting and Kallis, or perhaps another dark horse like Kumar Sangakkara, who was also in talks with other franchises, will depend on what KKR’s management envisions for the team’s future. Ponting’s aggressive style might appeal to a team looking to dominate from the outset, while Kallis’s calm and composed approach could be seen as stabilizing for a squad that might need to adapt to life post-Gambhir.

The decision is not just about replacing Gambhir but about setting the direction for KKR in the coming seasons. Ponting’s potential appointment could signal a shift towards a more dynamic, perhaps risk-taking strategy, aligning with his reputation for turning games with bold moves. His experience with international cricket and the IPL could be invaluable in nurturing young talents within KKR or in strategizing against the ever-evolving tactics of rival teams.

As the IPL 2025 approaches, the speculation around KKR’s new mentor adds another layer of intrigue. Will Ricky Ponting’s tactical brain be the next to steer KKR towards glory, or will another cricketing legend take the helm? The answer lies in the coming weeks, but one thing is clear: KKR’s choice will be pivotal in shaping not just their immediate future but their legacy in the IPL.
