“He’s Out In The Nets…” – Sunil Gavaskar Praises Virat Kohli For His Dedication

The Border-Gavaskar Trophy has always been a crucible where cricketing legends are forged and tested. In the first Test, led by Jasprit Bumrah, India secured a convincing victory by 295 runs, setting an optimistic tone for the series. However, the tide turned dramatically in the second Test at Adelaide, a pink ball affair led by Rohit Sharma, where India suffered a crushing defeat by 10 wickets after setting an embarrassingly low target of just 19 runs. Among the many narratives from this match, one that stood out was the performance of Virat Kohli. Having scored a century in the first Test at Perth, Kohli’s scores of 7 and 11 in Adelaide were below his usual standards, raising eyebrows and questions about his form.

Despite this setback, response of Virat Kohli was not one of defeat but of determination. Sunil Gavaskar, himself an icon of Indian cricket, observed and praised dedication of Virat Kohli in the aftermath of the defeat. “By going out in the nets today, shows his dedication. But that is what I would like to see from everybody else. He’s not scored runs. He is very proud of what he achieves and does for India, and because he’s not scored runs in this game, he’s out in the nets.” Gavaskar’s words reflect not only on personal ethos of Virat Kohli but also on the ethos expected from the cricketing fraternity at large.

Gavaskar further elaborated on the importance of effort in sports, especially when not in one’s best form, stating, “He’s working hard, he’s sweating, and that is what you want to see. After that if you get out, no problem, because that’s what sport is all about. You will get runs one day, will get wickets one day, next day you will not. But you’ve got to put in the effort. He is putting in the hard yards, he is putting in the effort, and that’s why I won’t be surprised if he’s back amongst the runs in the next game.” This insight from Gavaskar underscores the cyclical nature of sports where success and failure are intertwined, and the only constant that can influence this cycle is hard work.

Virat Kohli’s immediate return to practice post-match, as highlighted by Gavaskar, is a testament to his character and commitment to the sport. It’s a reminder that in cricket, as in life, resilience and diligence are as crucial as talent. The series moves forward, with the cricketing world watching not just the scores but the spirit and effort behind them. If Kohli’s dedication in the nets is any indication, the next Test might see him reclaiming his prowess, proving once again why he’s considered one of the best in the business. His response to adversity could very well inspire not only his teammates but also a generation of cricketers to embrace the grind, understanding that in the game of cricket, every new day brings a new opportunity to shine.
