2 Players KKR Might Miss Badly In IPL 2025

The Indian Premier League (IPL) has always been a platform where the absence of key players can shift the dynamics of a team significantly. After clinching the IPL 2024 title, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) now face the challenge of filling the shoes of two pivotal players for the 2025 season: Mitchell Starc and Phil Salt. Their departure to other franchises has left fans and analysts speculating about the potential impact on KKR’s performance. Here, we delve into the roles these players played, their contributions, and how KKR might navigate the upcoming season without them.

Mitchell Starc:

In the IPL 2024 auction, KKR made a statement by securing Mitchell Starc for a record-breaking Rs 24.75 crore, making him the most expensive player in IPL history at that point. Starc’s reputation as one of the best fast bowlers in the world preceded him, but skepticism surrounded his ability to justify such a hefty price tag, especially given his sporadic appearances in the IPL due to injuries and international commitments.

Starc, however, silenced doubters with his performances in IPL 2024. His ability to swing the new ball was crucial in the powerplay, often setting the tone for KKR’s bowling attack. He managed 17 wickets in 14 matches, but his real prowess was seen in clutch moments, particularly in the playoffs and the final. His match-winning spell in the final against Sunrisers Hyderabad, where he took crucial wickets to stifle the batting lineup, was a testament to his value.

Beyond statistics, Starc brought a psychological advantage to KKR. His presence alone was a deterrent to opposing batsmen, especially in the powerplay and death overs. His ability to deliver yorkers and mix up his pace made him a versatile weapon, particularly in high-pressure games where KKR needed someone to take charge.

With Starc moving to Delhi Capitals, KKR loses not just a bowler but a match-winner with experience in handling big games. His departure means KKR needs to find a bowler who can not only take wickets but also manage the game’s tempo. The team will miss his leadership in the bowling department and his strategic acumen, which was often seen in how he used the conditions to his advantage.

Phil Salt:

Phil Salt was not initially on many radars, having gone unsold in the auction but then picked up by KKR as a replacement for Jason Roy. His signing turned out to be one of the shrewdest moves by KKR, transforming their batting strategy at the top.

Salt’s contribution in IPL 2024 was monumental. He scored 435 runs in 12 games at a strike rate of 182.01, providing KKR with explosive starts that often put the opposition on the back foot from the very first over. His partnership with Sunil Narine was one of the highlights of the season, setting records with their aggressive play.

Salt and Narine’s opening combination was unique, combining unorthodox batting with sheer power, which was especially effective against pace bowling. Salt’s fearless approach against fast bowlers, his ability to clear boundaries, and his quick running between the wickets added a dynamic edge to KKR’s batting.

With Salt now at Royal Challengers Bangalore, KKR faces a significant gap at the top of the order. His role wasn’t just about scoring runs but also about setting an aggressive tone that influenced the entire innings. KKR will need to find another opener who can match Salt’s aggression and strike rate, a task easier said than done given his performances in 2024.

Strategic Implications for KKR:

For KKR, replacing Starc’s role means either investing in another high-profile overseas bowler or developing one of their Indian pacers to take on more responsibility. Players like Harshit Rana have shown promise, but they would need to step up significantly. Additionally, KKR might look towards the auction for a bowler who can offer similar control in the powerplay and at the death.

The loss of Salt requires KKR to rethink their opening strategy. Potential options include promoting someone like Rahmanullah Gurbaz or looking into the auction market for an opener who can replicate Salt’s impact. KKR might also consider reshuffling their batting order to cover the loss of quick runs at the top, perhaps giving more responsibility to middle-order players like Rinku Singh or Venkatesh Iyer.

KKR’s management and coaching staff, under head coach Chandrakant Pandit and mentor Gautam Gambhir, have shown an ability to innovate. They might experiment with new combinations or even alter the team’s approach to batting in the powerplay. The focus could shift towards a more balanced approach where the team doesn’t rely heavily on one or two players but rather on collective performance.

The IPL 2025 season will test KKR’s depth and adaptability. While losing players like Starc and Salt is a setback, it also opens opportunities for new talents to emerge. KKR will need to leverage the auction wisely, possibly focusing on players who can fill specific roles left vacant by these two stars. Additionally, nurturing domestic talent could be key to maintaining competitiveness.

Mitchell Starc and Phil Salt were not just players but pillars of KKR’s success in IPL 2024. Their absence in the 2025 season will undoubtedly be felt, but it’s also an opportunity for KKR to redefine their strategy. The team’s challenge will be to maintain the aggressive cricket that has become their hallmark, while also ensuring the bowling attack remains potent without Starc’s leadership. As the IPL evolves, so must KKR, and their response to this challenge will be one of the most intriguing narratives of IPL 2025.
