The Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) is navigating a period of rapid commercial expansion as internal reports point to a significant financial upswing following the second edition of the Nepal Premier League (NPL). The tournament, which has quickly established itself as a cornerstone of the domestic sporting calendar, is reportedly generating revenue levels that far exceed earlier projections.

Following a series of board-level discussions, the governing body is looking to capitalize on this momentum. The success of the NPL is being viewed as a litmus test for the commercial viability of cricket in Nepal, a country where the national team’s international rise has created an insatiable demand for high-quality domestic competition.

### Scaling the Commercial Model

The financial health of the league appears to have taken a major step forward compared to its debut season. While initial editions of any league are often marked by heavy setup costs, sources indicate that the most recent iteration of the NPL has moved into a comfortably profitable position. Gross income before revenue sharing is said to have reached a record high, allowing for a more substantial distribution of funds among the eight competing franchises.

This revenue-sharing model is critical for the long-term survival of the teams. Each franchise has taken on substantial payrolls for foreign internationals and local stars alike, and the ability of CAN to provide a return on that investment is what keeps the private sector engaged. Initial assessments suggest that the profit margins for CAN itself have more than tripled year-on-year, providing a much-needed war chest for the association’s broader development goals.

The financial uptick is a direct result of increased broadcasting rights fees and a surge in title sponsorships. But as the money flows in, the association is under pressure to show that these funds are being channeled back into the grassroots of the sport.

### Funding a New Era for Women’s Cricket

One of the most significant pivots mentioned in recent board meetings involves a dedicated investment into the women’s game. Under guidance from international governing bodies, the association is expected to allocate hundreds of thousands of dollars toward female cricketers and their domestic infrastructure.

Historically, the women’s game in Nepal has lacked the same financial backing and spotlight as the men’s national team. This new capital injection is reportedly earmarked for high-performance training camps and the establishment of a more robust domestic tournament structure. For many in the cricket community, this move is long overdue. By providing a clear professional pathway, CAN hopes to tap into a wider pool of talent and improve Nepal’s standings in international women’s rankings.

### Looking for Land: The Infrastructure Crisis

Success on the balance sheet is being tempered by a looming crisis regarding match venues. Nepal’s premier international facility, the Tribhuvan University (TU) International Cricket Stadium in Kirtipur, is operating under a lease that is nearing its expiration.

The association is reportedly in urgent talks with the National Sports Council to secure an extension. The TU ground is the “spiritual home” of the sport in the country, and losing access to it—even temporarily—would throw the international schedule into chaos.

Consequently, the board is pushing for the handover of more sites, specifically targeting the Mulpani area. The goal is to develop a second international-standard venue in Kathmandu to relieve the pressure on the Kirtipur site. High-level officials within the board have hinted that private investors are ready to fund stadium construction, but they remain hesitant until the land-use rights are fully secured and legally clear.

### Administrative Shake-ups and Local Elections

The governing body is also preparing for a period of administrative transition. Plans are being finalized for the annual general convention, which is expected to take place in Biratnagar in the coming weeks. This convention is likely to serve as a platform for revising the association’s bylaws and setting the budget for the next fiscal year.

A major focus will be on the district associations. Many of these local bodies are currently operating under extended terms, and the board has indicated that mandatory elections must take place by the middle of the year. These elections are seen as essential for refreshing leadership at the provincial level and ensuring that the regional associations are aligned with the national board’s new, commercially-driven strategy.

### Navigating the Growth Pains

Despite the optimism surrounding the revenue figures, CAN faces an uphill battle in professionalizing all aspects of the sport. While the NPL has proven that the audience and the sponsors are there, the lack of secondary venues and the legal hurdles regarding stadium ownership remain significant bottlenecks.

The coming months will be defining for Nepali cricket. If the association can resolve its land-tenure issues while maintaining its current commercial trajectory, the NPL may well become a significant regional rival to more established T20 leagues. But without a stable home for its matches, even the most impressive financial reports will do little to secure the game’s future.

### Nepal Premier League Financial Outlook

**How is the revenue from the NPL distributed?**
Revenue is reportedly split between the central governing body and the eight franchises. Sources suggests a 50-50 split on shared revenue streams, which helps teams cover the costs of player salaries and operations.

**What is the priority for new funding?**
Beyond the men’s professional game, a significant portion of incoming funds is being directed toward women’s cricket development and the construction of new grounds to address the current infrastructure shortage.

**Why is the stadium lease such a critical issue?**
Currently, Nepal has a very limited number of grounds capable of hosting international matches or the high-production requirements of the NPL. Securing long-term leases for the TU Ground and Mulpani is seen as the only way to ensure the sport’s growth isn’t stunted by a lack of facilities.
