RR vs RCB IPL 2026: Royal Challengers Bengaluru hit their first roadblock of the IPL 2026 season on 10 April, losing by six wickets to Rajasthan Royals at Guwahati’s Barsapara Cricket Stadium. RCB put up a solid 201/8, led by captain Rajat Patidar’s 63 off 40, with Virat Kohli adding 32 and Venkatesh Iyer chipping in a quick-fire 29. However, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi tore the target apart with a 26-ball 78, before Dhruv Jurel’s steady 81* finished the job with two overs to spare. This loss didn’t just end RCB’s winning streak; it highlighted a few tactical gaps that the team needs to fix quickly.

3 Changes Bengaluru Might Make After The RR vs RCB IPL 2026 Loss

1. Plugging the Middle-Overs Run Leak

Josh Hazlewood did claim two wickets in a burst midway through the chase, briefly pulling the contest back in RCB’s favour, but the middle overs between those breakthroughs bled far too many runs. Krunal Pandya’s two wickets in two balls produced a mini-collapse, yet the fact that RR were still scoring at better than 13 runs per over through the seventh and eighth overs suggests RCB’s bowling plans in the middle phase need rethinking. Playing an additional wrist-spinner or deploying Krunal earlier in the innings could plug this gap significantly.

2. Protecting the Powerplay More Aggressively With the Ball

The RR vs RCB IPL 2026 contest made painfully clear that RCB failed to exploit the powerplay with the ball nearly as well as their opponents did. RR finished the first six overs at 97 for one, a platform so dominant that the rest of the chase became a formality. RCB’s opening bowling combination could not replicate the discipline that RR’s attack, featuring Jofra Archer and Nandre Burger as the new-ball pair, showed throughout the tournament so far.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar, though experienced, leaked runs at a stage when containment mattered most, and Patidar must consider whether a more aggressive pace option at the top of the attack gives RCB a better chance of taking early wickets and setting a different tone in the powerplay overs of future IPL 2026 fixtures.

3. Strengthening the Death-Batting Finishing Depth

Although Venkatesh Iyer’s quickfire  29 off 15 and Romario Shepherd’s 22 off 11 gave RCB’s innings a flourishing finish, the fact remains that RCB ultimately finished on 201, which was a total that proved insufficient on a track where RR’s batters found the boundary with alarming ease. The RR vs RCB IPL 2026 match highlighted that Bengaluru’s lower order, beyond Iyer and Shepherd, lacks the consistency to push scores past 220 on batting-friendly surfaces.

Tim David, talented as he is, needs more balls in the final four overs to be truly destructive. Restructuring the batting order so that David comes in at number five rather than six, with a genuine finisher batting at seven, could add fifteen to twenty runs per innings, which will be a margin that very well decides IPL 2026 outcomes.
