GT vs KKR IPL 2026: The 2024 IPL champions, Kolkata Knight Riders, couldn’t have asked for a worse start to their title defence. Five games in, they are the only team yet to get a win on the board in IPL 2026, struggling through three losses and a washout. Their bowling attack, now missing its biggest stars, has looked vulnerable every time they take the field.

With Harshit Rana and Akash Deep sidelined by injuries, the team have had to rely on Vaibhav Arora, Cameron Green, Blessing Muzarabani, and Kartik Tyagi, a group that just hasn’t been able to deliver. This slump has made fans even more desperate to see Matheesha Pathirana in action. KKR shelled out a massive ₹18 crore for the Sri Lankan pacer at the 2026 auction, snatching him away from Chennai Super Kings after they released him following a tough 2025 season.

Will Pathirana feature in the GT vs KKR IPL 2026 game on 17 April?

The short answer is no. According to the latest reports from ESPNcricinfo, Pathirana has recovered from his injury and is headed to India. He is expected to land on April 17, the same day KKR take on Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium, but he won’t be ready to play just yet. He should be available for selection for the next game on April 19, when KKR return to Eden Gardens to host Rajasthan Royals, provided the team’s medical staff gives him the final green light.

Getting him to this point hasn’t been easy. Matheesha Pathirana picked up a leg injury during Sri Lanka’s T20 World Cup clash against Australia in Pallekele, which immediately put his IPL start in jeopardy. Things looked shaky as recently as April 6, when he still hadn’t shown up for Sri Lanka Cricket’s mandatory fitness test. It felt a lot like the Wanindu Hasaranga situation, who suffered a similar injury at the World Cup and was eventually ruled out of the entire IPL season.

Luckily, Matheesha Pathirana’s recovery went better. He passed his fitness tests and secured a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from Sri Lanka Cricket. Even then, there were some hold-ups; Cricbuzz reported that the franchise were still sorting out travel logistics for the 23-year-old even after he was cleared to fly, which is a strange delay for a player they invested so heavily in.

This means Friday’s game against GT will happen without Matheesha Pathirana. His debut in KKR colours is now set for the Rajasthan Royals match two days later. For a team stuck at the bottom of the table and leaking runs at the end of the innings, he can’t return soon enough. His slingy action and pinpoint yorkers are exactly what KKR need to fix their death-bowling woes.

Pathirana’s IPL record heading into his KKR chapter

Pathirana broke onto the scene with the Chennai Super Kings in 2022. He quickly became a vital part of their bowling attack, especially during their 2023 championship run, where he took 19 wickets and became MS Dhoni’s go-to man in the death overs.

As per ESPNcricinfo, Matheesha Pathirana has 47 wickets in 32 IPL matches at an average of 21.62 and an economy of 8.68, with a career-best of 4/28. While he hasn’t bowled a ball yet in IPL 2026, KKR are banking on him to start padding those stats the moment he takes the field on April 19.
